June is men’s mental health awareness month. Sadly, due to societal norms, stigma and other factors, men are much less likely to seek mental health treatment than women, despite being nearly 4x more likely to die by su***de. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), in 2023, only 45.9% of U.S. adult men with a mental health disorder received professional treatment within the previous year. We are well overdue as a society to change the nonsensical views surrounding mental health as a whole, but especially with how it relates to men. Mental health problems are just as common as physical health issues, and they can lead to catastrophic outcomes if left untreated. Help change the stigma. Normalize talking about mental health with your dad, your brother, your uncle, your friend, your colleague, your teammate, etc. It is not only okay for men to admit that they’re having a bad day, or to cry, or to get emotional, or to ask for help, rather, it is powerful to do so. A large part of the reason I decided to become a psychiatric mental health NP was to help spark this change and I do believe that with time, education, resources and help from the community, we can improve mental health outcomes for men (and women).

I am accepting new clients and I typically can see them within 7 days of their first outreach to me. I also recently lowered my initial evaluation fee and I do offer a free 15-minute telephone consultation. If you or anyone you know is looking for professional mental health treatment, please send them my way. I am happy to help.

HEALTHY EATING for your mental health!

Whole eggs are packed with choline, B vitamins and tryptophan. These nutrients can improve our sleep, mood regulation, memory and anxiety symptoms.

Turkey also contains tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid that helps our body produce the neurotransmitter serotonin. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders.

Avocados are loaded with healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats) which are critical for brain health and functioning. This delicious fruit also contains tryptophan and vitamin B9 aka folate or folic acid, which aids in the production of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine- all of which play a role in our mental health.

HEALTHY EATING for your mental health!

A diet primarily consistent of whole foods not only provides benefits to your physical health, but also, your mental health (more specific details to follow in subsequent posts).

Whole foods are foods that are minimally processed (if at all) and, therefore, maintain their natural nutrients. Examples of whole foods are: unprocessed meats and fish, fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Work on limiting and even avoiding your consumption of processed foods. Processed foods often lack significant nutritional value, contribute mightily to chronic illnesses and to the overweight and obesity epidemic in the U.S. Ultra-processed foods are linked to an increased risk for anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders. Processed foods are things like sugary drinks, fast food, sweets, frozen dinners and breakfast cereal.
