Pain is one of the most personal experiences we can have, and no two people experience it exactly the same way.
After working with adults for more than 15 years, one of the most hopeful things I've learned is that pain doesn't always tell the whole story. This isn't about dismissing pain, it's about understanding it a little better.
People often believe that if something hurts, it must mean something is seriously damaged.
While injuries can absolutely cause pain, modern research has shown that pain is much more complex than that.
Think about a paper cut.
It's tiny...yet it can sting for hours.
Now think about athletes who sometimes finish a game before realizing they've fractured a bone.
Pain doesn't always match the amount of tissue damage.
Our bodies have an incredible protective alarm system that's designed to keep us safe.
Understanding how pain works doesn't mean your pain isn't real, it absolutely is.
It simply means there are many factors that can influence how we feel, including movement, sleep, stress, previous experiences, and overall health.
One of the most empowering things we can do is stop viewing our bodies as "broken" and start understanding how adaptable they truly are.
Have you ever experienced pain that didn't seem to match what was actually going on?
I'd love to hear your thoughts.
P.S. I recently put together an educational resource on understanding pain and healthy aging. It's titled Understanding Pain: A Modern Guide to Moving Better, Feeling Better & Living with Confidence.
