Before there was a Mountain Goat Movement, there was a high school literature classroom in Jersey City.

Greg Morrissey taught for nearly a decade at Saint Peter's Prep, close enough to Manhattan to see the skyline from the block. In a place like that, the outdoors is an afterthought. There is always something more immediate competing for a student's attention.

From there, he spent school years teaching and summers on expedition, and slowly proved a point that has held up ever since that students who struggle to find themselves in a classroom often find themselves on a trail.

In 2017, he won the The American Alpine Club's Live Your Dream Grant and rode 1,800 unsupported miles with a fellow teacher, raising $40,000 so students who could not otherwise afford a trip could come on one. That number is now over $200,000.

That is where this started. Everything since has been an extension of it.

Do you know the Adirondack Park covers more than 6 million acres?! 🌲🥾

That makes it the largest publicly protected area in the contiguous US and bigger than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon combined! This Sept. and National Wilderness Month is a great reminder why MGM exists. Wilderness is not a reward students earn after the learning is done. It is where a lot of the best learning actually happens.

As we say goodbye to National Water Quality Month, we're celebrating the rivers, lakes, streams, and oceans that make so many of our adventures possible. From crossing rivers and surfing waves to cooling off after a long hike, water is at the heart of so many outdoor experiences.
