Strep throat or a viral sore throat? 🤒

A sore throat can have many causes, and the symptoms can sometimes look similar. Cough, runny nose, and hoarseness are more common with viral infections, while sudden throat pain, fever, swollen tonsils, or swollen neck lymph nodes may lead a provider to consider strep testing.

A strep test may help confirm whether group A strep is causing the infection. Antibiotics treat confirmed bacterial strep infections, not viral infections.
