Mom heard “go away.” The SLP heard “he had something to say and knew exactly how to say it.” 😂👏

AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) helps people express their needs, feelings, and opinions—even when the teacher would prefer a different opinion. 😅

Saying “no,” asking for space, and speaking up for yourself are communication wins, too. Everyone deserves a voice—and the freedom to use it. 💙

💙🗣️ October is AAC Awareness Month!

Did you know that communication doesn’t always have to involve speaking? 💬

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, and it helps individuals who have difficulty communicating through spoken language express their wants, needs, thoughts, feelings, and so much more!

AAC can include communication boards, picture symbols, gestures, sign language, and speech-generating devices like the one shown in this video! 📱✨

AAC isn’t just about requesting things. It’s about building connections, expressing personality, making choices, and giving individuals the opportunity to communicate in a way that works best for them.

If grown adults still have meltdowns when they’re hungry, tired, or overwhelmed… why do we expect a 4-year-old to have it all figured out? 😂🧠

Emotional regulation is a LEARNED skill, not something children are born knowing how to do! 💙

Just like speech and language, learning to manage big emotions takes time, patience, practice, and support.

✨ Remember: Children need co-regulation before they can independently self-regulate. Modeling calm responses, validating feelings, and teaching coping strategies can make a BIG difference!

October is AAC Awareness Month! 💙🗣️

Communication looks different for everyone—and every form of communication is valid. AAC can include gestures, pictures, communication boards, devices, apps, and so much more.

And because Halloween is right around the corner… 🎃👻 I created a Trick-or-Treat AAC Communication Board to help make Halloween a little more accessible for ALL communicators!

Save this post, print the board, or share it with a family, teacher, caregiver, or communication partner who may find it helpful. 💙

Remember: AAC does not prevent speech—it gives people another way to communicate.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to say “Trick or treat,” “More please,” “Thank you,” “All done,” or even “That’s spooky!” in the way that works best for them. 🎃🍬
