Some of you aren’t “bad at handling stress.”
Your nervous system is exhausted.
You have spent years carrying grief, childhood trauma, rejection, abandonment, financial pressure, relationship wounds, family dysfunction, responsibility, disappointment—and still getting up every morning acting like everything is fine.
Then we wonder why anxiety is through the roof.
Why depression creeps in.
Why you can’t sleep.
Why you’re exhausted but can’t rest.
Why your mind won’t shut off.
Why something small can trigger a response that feels disproportionately big.
Talk therapy can help you understand what happened to you. But you cannot always talk your nervous system out of what your body learned to do to survive.
You can understand your childhood trauma and still have a body that braces for abandonment.
You can forgive someone and still feel your chest tighten when they enter the room.
You can know you’re financially safe today and still panic when money leaves your account.
You can know you’re loved and still expect rejection.
Because some wounds aren’t only held in the story you remember.
They’re reflected in the patterns your nervous system learned.
And until you begin practicing ways to REGULATE your nervous system—breathwork, somatic work, movement, meditation, prayer, healthy community, boundaries, restorative sleep, time in nature, trauma-informed support—you may continue trying to THINK your way out of something your BODY is still responding to.
And while you are doing the deeper work, there are botanical and nutritional supports worth learning about.
MOOD HELPERS FROM NATURE
SAFFRON
This isn’t just a culinary spice. Saffron has become one of the most interesting botanicals being researched for mood support, including symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.
LEMON BALM
The “exhale” herb. Traditionally used for nervous tension, restlessness and relaxation. Beautiful support when your mind feels like it has 37 tabs open.
ASHWAGANDHA
An ancient Ayurvedic adaptogen traditionally used to help the body adapt to stress. Modern research has also explored its effects on perceived stress, cortisol, anxiety and sleep.
PASSIONFLOWER EXTRACT
Traditionally used to calm nervousness and restlessness and support sleep. Especially interesting because researchers have explored its relationship with the GABA system—the neurological “braking system” that helps quiet excessive nervous-system activity.
LION’S MANE MUSHROOM
This is the mushroom I would reach for when we’re talking about the brain. Lion’s Mane is being researched for cognitive and neurological health, including compounds associated with nerve growth factor. Emerging research is also examining its potential role in mood and stress.
L. REUTERI
A probiotic species that brings us directly into the fascinating world of the gut-brain axis. Your gut and brain are constantly communicating. Researchers continue to investigate how specific microbes may influence stress responses, neurotransmitter signaling and emotional health. Probiotic benefits are strain-specific, so this isn’t as simple as “take any probiotic.”
And then there are three important chemical messengers you need to know:
GABA — your brake.
Helps quiet nervous-system activity and promotes calm.
SEROTONIN — your regulator.
Plays important roles in mood, sleep, appetite and emotional regulation.
DOPAMINE — your drive.
Involved in motivation, reward, attention, learning and pleasure.
These aren’t herbs. They’re neurotransmitters your body already uses, and supporting the systems responsible for healthy neurotransmitter function is very different from simply trying to “boost” them.
I would NOT put Mugwort in the same category. I love ancient herbal medicine, but the evidence isn’t strong enough for me to teach Mugwort as a primary anxiety/depression botanical when we have stronger options. But it’s a wonderful herb if you want to get high 😂 - As Native Americans loved it!
But please hear the bigger message:
YOU NEED SUPPORT.
We were never designed to carry this much stress, responsibility, trauma and emotional weight alone.
Get the therapist.
Find the community.
Learn the breathing techniques.
Move your body.
Sit in the sun.
Take the walk.
Pray.
Sleep.
Eat food that nourishes your nervous system.
Explore appropriate botanical support.
Learn what safety actually feels like inside your body.
And stop wearing your ability to survive without help like it’s a badge of honor.
Survival kept you alive.
But regulation, support, connection and healing can teach your body that it doesn’t have to live like the danger is still happening.
You deserve more than learning how to function while you’re falling apart.
You deserve to experience what it feels like to be supported while you heal.
