When a Child is Dysregulated…
Focus on calming the nervous system FIRST,
THEN solving the problem.

Regulation comes before problem solving. Calm the hypothalamus and amygdala ⟶ Shift brain function back to prefontal cortex ⟶ Problem-solve

Supporting Regulation in the Moment:

Decrease verbal input (less talking = less overwhelm)
Use co-regulation strategies (your calm supports their calm)
Remove the pressure to solve the problem (support first, then solve)
Use visuals and simple, clear directives

Strategies to Support Regulation:
Deep breathing or sensory breaks
Quiet space or “take a break” area
Movement (walk, stretch, heavy work)
Co-regulation with an adult
