Cal-Ore Life Flight REMS Team, with Cal-Ore/REACH 19, participated in the annual Coos Forest Coos Bay Unit EMS & REMS Awareness Training. This multi-agency training brought together the following fire and response agencies: North Bend Fire, Coos Bay Fire, Myrtle Point Fire, USCG, Bandon Fire, USFS, Western Lane Fire, North Douglas Fire, DFPA, CFPA, and the AMR REMS Team.

The training focused on strengthening interagency coordination and enhancing operational readiness for complex rescue scenarios. Instruction and hands-on exercises included over-the-bank rescue techniques, patient packaging and extraction, 8-line medical communication training, helicopter awareness and landing zone (LZ) operations, and an overview of hoisting capabilities. These evolutions provided participants with practical, scenario-based experience designed to improve safety, efficiency, and effectiveness during real-world missions.

Approximately 80 personnel from the participating departments attended the training, reflecting strong regional collaboration and commitment to preparedness. This event also served as an important component of readiness planning in advance of the upcoming wildland fire season, ensuring agencies are well-prepared to support wildland fire deployment and extended operations as needed.

(REMINDER) DEL NORTE 199/197 DELAYS BEGINNING MONDAY, FULL CLOSURES LATER THIS SUMMER: Travelers on U.S. 199 and Route 197 northeast of Crescent City should plan for delays beginning as soon as Monday, May 11.

The initial delays next week are expected along U.S. 199 near postmiles 20.2 and 23.2, with up to 10-minute holds at each location.

Delay times and work locations will also be listed in advance in the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads, which is typically refreshed on Thursday afternoons.

Full closures are not expected to begin until late July or early August.

When full closures begin, they are expected to be scheduled Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with occasional pauses possible from week to week.

Full closures will be limited to specific spot locations shown on the project graphic, not the entire project corridor all at once.

Later this summer, for the most precise advance notice of which postmiles will be impacted by full closures each week, please check the weekly Road Information Bulletin at tinyurl.com/d1roads and continue following this page.

Once they begin, full closures will be necessary for the safety of workers and travelers during operations such as rock blasting and slope stabilization, and the closures will reduce the project timeline by approximately four years.

Night and weekend work will be minimal, and is only expected for signal operations and maintenance, as daylight is needed for safety due to the nature of the main construction work.

The 197/199 Safe STAA Access Highway Improvement Project will upgrade a few tight and narrow spots on Route 197 and U.S. 199 so industry-standard sized trucks can use the corridor, improving goods movement efficiency without causing a major jump in truck traffic or higher speed limits. Improvements like wider lanes, shoulders, curves, and better sight distance are intended to help all travelers. The targeted improvements, amending only 1.7 miles of roadway, also include bridge work, drainage improvements, pavement upgrades, guardrail installation, and slope stabilization.

You can read more about the project at tinyurl.com/dnstaa.

Cal-Ore REMS & Wildland Fire deployment team recently completed the S-130 and L-180 classroom courses, along with a hands-on Basic Wildland Firefighter field day. This comprehensive training ensured participants received both the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to safely and effectively operate in a wildland fire environment.

The S-130 training course is designed to provide the foundational skills required for all wildland firefighters, including fire behavior, suppression techniques, safety protocols, and proper use of tools and equipment. The L-180 course, Human Factors on the Fireline, focuses on the psychological, physical, and environmental factors that influence firefighter performance, decision-making, and overall safety during wildfire operations. Together, these courses help prepare personnel to operate as effective members of an interagency wildland fire response.

We would like to thank CCF&R, the Cal Fire Crescent City crew, and Jon Maxwell for their time, expertise, and commitment to developing and delivering this training. Their support and collaboration are critical to strengthening regional readiness and ensuring our teams are prepared to respond safely and professionally during wildfire incidents.
