… a birth story worth being told!

Let me take a moment to introduce myself. I’m Makeda, a Brooklyn, NY based mother of 3 who was successful at achieving vaginal birth after 2 c-sections. My children were born February 2018, February 2019 & December 2020, so the thought of attempting to have a VBAC was certainly shunned upon. Both of my daughters were emergency c-sections & although I did everything in my power to have natural births, I never made it past 6cm with either daughter. Through much preparation & focused prayer/spiritual work, I achieved VBAC success.

Prior to becoming a mother, I never imagined having one c-section much less two. Those birth stories put the fire in me to try for a VBAC the third time around. They also allowed me to fully understand why informed birth is is necessary for ALL mothers and families.

Chiropractor or Acupuncturist??? Comment below your choice.

📣 This is such a tough one for me as I’ve used both and the timing around their use is what mattered the most for me.

📣 CHIROPRACTIC CARE is great for pregnant women because it can help aid in discomfort and larger issues throughout your body. Your body goes through periods of misalignment of the joints which can lead to issues with multiple systems of the body. Chiropractic care can also be a major help with opening the pelvis to allow for baby to be in the proper position for labor and delivery.

‼️ PRO-TIP: Not all Chiropractors are created equal when working on pregnant women. The Webster technique is the known technique for adjusting pregnant women. Be sure to do research on the practitioners before making an appointment. If they do not have the proper equipment for pregnant women you may want to try another service provider.

📣 ACUPUNCTURE is a method of applying pressure to certain points of the body to stimulate certain parts of the nervous system. It opens up flows of energy within the body and can be extremely beneficial to women pre-pregnancy, during and post.

‼️ PRO-TIP: Acupuncture is usually not a one time visit practice. Typically multiple sessions are needed before someone really experiences the benefits.

The two in tandem can work wonders for some women, especially those seeking !

Keep pushing!!!!

The past month has literally been a whirlwind… talk about obstacle after obstacle simply getting in the way of all I know I need to do. As some of you may know I’m Makeda, Mama of 4:
Bonus Daughter whose 8
4 year old (1st c-section)
3 year old (2nd c-section)
19 month old (VBA2C)

Life is very full and there literally is never a dull moment. In the midst of all my responsibilities I am constantly being reminded of the need to continue to be present in this space.

Prior to becoming a mother I knew I wanted a natural home birth. Circumstance led me down a different path, twice, and I am grateful it did. My birth stories grant me the space to be able to speak from my experience in an authentic way. I had an opportunity to tell a Mama my story today and I am glad I had the chance to do so. Every chance to brings me joy and a renewed sense of purpose.

Thank you for the reminder Sis to KEEP PUSHING! May the doors open for your VBAC success! You got this!!!!

✅ There is a less than 1% chance you will experience a uterine rupture and out of that less than 1% chance, women who undergo induced labors are included in that number. ⁠
⁠
✅ While inducing for some can produce magic, unnecessary inductions is one of the quickest ways to overwork the uterus during labor & delivery and potentially lead to a repeat . ⁠
⁠
✅ Out of the 0.4% chance of a uterine rupture, 0.02-0.04% of those ruptures can be catastrophic. ⁠

📣 In life we take risks daily, and it’s important to understand what those risks really mean especially in the world of birth. With fear-mongering being the #1 tool to persuade women to make different decisions, it’s important for all women to do their research in order to fully comprehend the likelihood of those risk factors happening to them. ⁠

📣 The US c-section rate is rising rapidly and out of that 31.8% only 13% of them are going on to achieve . Regardless of how common c-sections may seem, this is MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY with potential risks that to some far outweigh the risk of TOLAC (Trial of Labor After Cesearean). ⁠
⁠
📣 Many of the 31.8% are women having repeat c-sections, with providers who refuse to entertain the thought of VBAC. Providers who'd rather drill down on the fears at every appointment versus educate their patient on the actual numbers associated with their individual risk factors. ⁠
⁠
📣 I had 2 true emergency c-sections and I know without them my children wouldn't be here. However, c-sections are being used far to often for non-emergencies. Women across the country are having unnecessary c-sections because they are faster & lower liability risks for the doctors & hospitals.⁠

📣 The phrase “Once a c-section, always a c-section” became a popular term in the 70s once the c-section rate in the US tripled. I heard this phrase echoed so often after having my first daughter and it was so frustrating having to convince others that this wasn’t the case anymore. Many women are still told this and still believe this!! Although not every situation allows for a , most women who have a low transverse uterine incision are able to attempt a VBAC. And for those who try, many are successful. Thankfully I knew women who experienced VBAC which kept me focused on the goal.⁠

📣 VBAC is not only possible, it happens every single day for many mothers who’ve chosen to research their options and tune out the noise that isn’t fact. ⁠
