When I heard about Prince, my first thoughts were "drug overdose". Then I read that he had overdosed on Percocet a few days prior to his death and was hospitalized only briefly. Now news reports say he was found with prescription drugs when he died. We have to wait for all the autopsy tests but I fear we lost another one to the opioid crisis.

Only about 10 percent of substance dependence cases occur after adolescence. Thus, successful efforts to prevent, delay or minimize substance use during adolescence are sorely needed. Such systemic change can only be achieved through coordinated and multifaceted efforts. We must come together as a community to address this growing crisis. No one agency such as the police department or school department can fix a deep community-wide problem. WE MUST WORK TOGETHER.
