๐ฅตIs the Summer Heat Secretly Affecting Your Horseโs Performance? ๐ฅต
When we think about summer, we often focus on keeping our horses cool and hydrated, but did you know the heat can also have a significant impact on their muscles and recovery?
As temperatures and humidity rise, your horseโs body works much harder to regulate its temperature. This means more energy is being used just to stay cool, leaving less available for performance and recovery. Combined with training, hauling, competing, or long days at horse shows, this extra workload can lead to muscle fatigue, tightness, and stiffness.
Some common signs your horse may be feeling the effects of the heat include:
โ๏ธ Feeling stiff during warm up
โ๏ธ Shortened stride or reduced flexibility
โ๏ธ Muscle soreness or sensitivity
โ๏ธ Less impulsion or willingness to move forward
โ๏ธ Difficulty engaging the hind end
โ๏ธ Taking longer to recover after exercise
โ๏ธ Changes in attitude or performance
Recovery doesnโt begin when you get home, it starts as soon as youโre finished riding. Giving your horse time to properly cool down, providing access to fresh water, replacing electrolytes when appropriate, and avoiding overworking them in extreme heat all play an important role in supporting healthy muscles.
Regular Equine Myo-Manipulative Functional Therapy can also be a valuable part of your horseโs recovery routine. By addressing areas of muscle tension and restricted movement, bodywork can help improve mobility, encourage more comfortable movement, and support recovery after training and competition.
Just like human athletes, horses perform their best when their bodies have the opportunity to recover. A horse that recovers well is often more comfortable, more willing to work, and better prepared for the next ride, show, or race.
How has your horse been handling this summer heat? Have you noticed any changes in their recovery or performance? Let me know in the comments! ๐
