You may have noticed that Lue Haven’s political voice has gotten a little louder lately. That’s intentional.
Lue Haven was never created to only help people survive broken systems. We want to help change the systems that keep creating the same barriers in the first place. 😪
Behind the scenes, we’re spending a lot of time learning, listening, building relationships, attending community conversations, connecting with advocates, and expanding our understanding of how policy decisions actually affect the people we serve. Because compassionate care can only go so far when the systems surrounding it are built around barriers.
A person can have a case manager who believes in them, a peer supporter who listens, a safe place to sleep, and a community cheering them on. But if policies make housing inaccessible, restrict meaningful behavioral health services, create unnecessary hurdles to care, or leave families fighting through layers of bureaucracy just to receive basic support, we eventually run into the same wall.
Lue Haven doesn’t want to spend our entire existence helping people climb that wall. We want to help MOVE it. That means learning how local, state, and federal policy shapes the services available in our communities. It means building relationships with people who understand legislation, government, advocacy, and community development. It means having conversations with city officials, policymakers, advocates, and other organizations. And when appropriate, it means using our collective voice to advocate for policies that reduce barriers to compassionate, accessible care.
We’re still going to be in the community doing the hands-on work. That part will never ever change.
But we’re also looking upstream. The most meaningful interventions aren’t always another program. Sometimes it’s changing the policy that made the program necessary in the first place.
So if you’ve noticed Lue Haven talking a little more about policy, civic engagement, housing, behavioral health systems, disability rights, poverty, education, or other issues affecting our communities, now you know why.
We’re learning. We’re listening. We’re building relationships. And we’re getting increasingly serious about systems change.
