There’s a stage with OTTBs that almost nobody talks about.
The in-between...Not the track anymore, and not settled into their new life yet either.

We are excited and want to know the "plan" and the answers.

“What supplements should I add?”
“What training program should I start?”
“How fast can we get going?”

I beg you...Please don't rush this stage, this is where trust is built.
Where curiosity matters more than control and where observation matters more than assumptions. Keep it simple in the first days, weeks, and months.

The horses who transition the best are often the ones given space to decompress, express themselves, and slowly show us who they are underneath survival mode.

Sometimes the most important work isn’t training at all. It’s learning how to listen in the middle of the unknown.

Your energy matters more to your horse than you think.

Back when I was competing in 3-Day Eventing, we had separate schooling days for dressage, stadium, and cross country. I remember some stadium days where everything just flowed...I could see every distance, my horse and I felt completely connected, and it was like we were moving as one.

And then there were the opposite days… where I couldn’t find a distance to save my life. 😅

Looking back now, I can almost guarantee those “off” days had less to do with skill… and more to do with the state I was bringing into the ride.

Because horses feel ALL of it, our TENSION, STRESS, MENTAL CLUTTER, and our CALM.

Even now, I have to check myself at the gate before working with a horse. How am I showing up today?

This is one reason I’ve been exploring flower essences more deeply for both myself and the horses, especially with the beloved OTTB's.

Unlike essential oils that work through scent and the limbic system, flower essences work more energetically through the acupuncture meridians, helping shift emotional patterns, tension, and mental state.

Sometimes changing the energy you bring changes the entire interaction. ✨

One of the first signs a horse is truly settling in…is curiosity.
Not obedience. Not stillness. Not “doing everything right.”
👀 CURIOSITY 👀

Looking around. Engaging. Exploring. And what I think is most important is having opinions.

A shut-down horse doesn’t ask questions. They wait until they can no longer hold it in.

So when I see a horse start to reach out, investigate their environment, and interact without being asked...that's when I get excited! That's when I know something has shifted.

I know they’re no longer just coping…they’re participating! That's when we should be jumping up and down, applauding the horse for coming out of hibernation! 🙌

Curiosity is where connection begins and is the starting point of building that bond.

What’s something small your horse does that shows they’re starting to open up?

There’s a phase in OTTBs that most people miss. It’s not the arrival. It’s not the “problem phase.” It’s the in-between.
🔹
Where they are quiet, but not settled, compliant, but not confident, present, but not expressive.
🔹
This is where they’re deciding, “Is this a place where I can be myself?”
🔹
How we handle this phase determines everything that comes next.
🔹
If you push too soon, you build tension. Misread the quiet, you miss the signs.
🔹
If you give them space to process? That’s where curiosity starts to come back.
🔹
This phase is foundational, as uneventful as it might be.
🔹
Have you noticed this stage in your own horses?

Letting a horse have a voice doesn’t make them unsafe. But ignoring it sure does.
🔸
This is what I hear, “If I let them express themselves, won’t that create problems?”
🔸
Um, no, here's what I have witnessed over the years.
🔸
Horses that are never allowed to say “no” don’t become safer, they become quieter until they aren't, until they can't hold it in any longer. Then you see an explosion, they are maxed out, they can't hold it in any longer.
🔸
Expression doesn’t create chaos, it gives you information!
🔸
It tells you:
→ where they’re unsure
→ where they’re holding tension
→ where they don’t understand
🔸
Give them a chance to be heard, let them express themselves, and watch the trust build.
🔸
A horse that can communicate is a horse you can work with.
🔸
Have you ever had a horse change once they started expressing themselves more?

How do you feel about music being played while tacking up or riding your horse... Yay or Nay, & Why?

Yay or Nay, & Why?

“Good behavior” can be misleading. We’re taught to look for: ✔ quiet ✔ compliant ✔ easy-to-handle horses, which, in many cases, is a good sign!
♦️
With OTTBs fresh off the track…there’s another layer.
♦️
Some of these horses aren’t being “good” because they understand or feel safe.
♦️
They’re being good because they haven’t started responding yet.
♦️
They are in a paused state, a holding pattern in a nervous system that hasn't caught up.
♦️
And when it does? That’s when the real horse shows up, and the real work begins.
♦️
Compliance and relaxation are not the same thing.
♦️
What do you look for beyond behavior?

As an industry, we need to look beyond behavior and start asking: Is this horse truly coping or just complying?
🔹
For those who place, train, and advocate for OTTBs, this question matters. The quiet, “easy” horse is often the one most at risk of failing in a new home.
🔹
Compliance can be misleading. A horse that appears easy in the moment may not be adjusted, just quiet.
🔹
The quiet horses are often the ones who slip through the cracks. They transition without resistance, but not without impact.
🔹
When we rely on behavior alone to guide decisions, we risk overlooking what the horse is actually experiencing. And that’s where long-term success can start to unravel.
🔹
Looking deeper doesn’t complicate the process, it strengthens it!

The quietest horse in the barn…is rarely the one I trust at first. Especially with OTTBs coming straight off the track.
🐎
They stand still. They don’t react. They do everything “right.”
🐎
And everyone breathes a sigh of relief.
🐎
Sometimes that horse isn’t relaxed. They’re… absent.
🐎
Still processing. Still holding. Still figuring out if they’re allowed to have a response.
🐎
No curiosity. No expression. No opinion.
🐎
And then one day…they start to come back online.
🐎
That’s when people say: “He changed.”
🐎
But he didn’t. He just STARTED SHOWING UP!
🐎
That phase deserves more attention than it gets.
