By the time we see many horses, the challenge isn't figuring out what to removeโ€ฆ

It's recognizing how much has already been removed.

Years of excessive or aggressive floating can leave teeth so reduced that there simply isn't enough dental material remaining to make the changes a horse may now need.

And sometimes, the most appropriate decision is to leave the tooth alone and allow more tooth to erupt.

๐–๐ก๐ฒ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ญ๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐ฆ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ?

Because the teeth do not exist in isolation from the rest of the horse.

Their relationship with the mandible, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), hyoid, cranial bones, cranial nerves, craniosacral system, fascia, and upper cervical spine-C0, C1, and C2, is part of a much larger functional system.

From an osteopathic perspective, we aren't looking at the teeth as simply structures that need to be โ€œfloated.โ€ We are looking at how the entire stomatognathic system interacts with the rest of the body.

When we make osteopathic changes through the body, the dental structures need to be capable of supporting those changes.

If the teeth have been reduced too far, they may no longer provide the occlusal relationship necessary to support normal mandibular movement and TMJ function.

And that relationship matters.

So, what exactly is the pulp?

The pulp is the living, innermost portion of the tooth. It contains connective tissue, blood vessels, nerve fibers, and odontoblasts which are the cells responsible for producing dentin.

In the horse's cheek teeth, the pulp isn't one simple hollow chamber. Equine cheek teeth contain a complex pulp cavity system with multiple pulp horns. Depending on the tooth, individual cheek teeth can contain numerous pulp horns, some of which may lie surprisingly close to the occlusal surface.

It isn't simply an empty space.

It is living tissue.

The horse's hypsodont teeth are uniquely adapted to continual wear. Throughout the horse's life, the pulp produces dentin beneath the occlusal surface to help protect the pulp from being exposed as the tooth wears.

That protective dentin is incredibly important.

Research has demonstrated that the thickness of sub-occlusal secondary dentin can vary dramatically, not only between individual horses and teeth, but even between individual pulp horns within the same tooth. In some areas, the protective dentin has been measured at only a few millimeters.

That means we cannot assume that a certain amount of tooth reduction is automatically safe simply because the same amount was removed from another tooth or another horse.

Every tooth is not the same.

And when excessive tooth is removed, the pulp may be brought dangerously close to the occlusal surface or exposed.

One study examining overgrown equine cheek teeth found that reducing certain overgrowths completely to the level of adjacent teeth would have resulted in occlusal pulp exposure in 58% of the teeth studied, leading the authors to recommend gradual reduction of larger overgrowths over time.

There is another consideration:

Motorized dental instruments can generate significant heat within the tooth. Research measuring pulpal temperatures during mechanical reduction found that prolonged use of motorized instruments increased the likelihood of reaching potentially damaging pulpal temperatures. Greater dentinal thickness and water cooling were protective factors.

So excessive reduction isn't simply about how much tooth was removed.

It is also about what may have happened to the living structures underneath it.

And pulpal injury can be extremely painful.

If you've ever had a filling or other dental work, you know your dentist is concerned with how much healthy tooth structure remains between the surface and the pulp.

Human dentistry even uses procedures such as an indirect pulp cap when the pulp is very close to exposure, with the goal of protecting the pulp and supporting the tooth's natural reparative response.

The horse's tooth is very different from a human tooth, but the fundamental concept is worth understanding:

The living tissue inside the tooth matters.

And once we have removed too much tooth, we cannot simply put it back.

We also need to look beyond the โ€œpoll.โ€

A horse that continually develops poll tension, resists flexion, or repeatedly appears to need a poll adjustment may have contributing factors elsewhere.

Trauma, training, riding, muscular and fascial restrictions, cervical dysfunction, dental imbalance, TMJ dysfunction, and other factors can all contribute to how a horse carries and moves its head and neck.

From an osteopathic perspective, the question should not simply be:

โ€œWhere is the tension?โ€

It should be:

โ€œWhy is the tension there, and why does it keep returning?โ€

If we continually adjust the poll without asking why the tension keeps returning, we may be managing an expression of the problem rather than understanding the larger pattern.

Sometimes the answer isn't another adjustment.

It isn't another float.

It is time.

Time for the tooth to erupt.
Time for the tissues to adapt.
Time to address the body.
Time to reassess.

Because good dentistry isn't always about knowing what to take away.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is recognize what needs to remain.

And sometimesโ€ฆ

๐˜๐ž๐ฌ, one of the pictures features a dog leading a horse! This incredible dog helps his owner with a multitude of jobs, from leading horses and grooming (yes, even grooming their heads!) to telling a horse to stop pawing the ground. What a hardworking partner!

The mule pictured is blessed to have an incredible home with an owner who truly loves and understands her after she spent years working the fields. Being able to support her and her owner is a privilege. She is an incredibly sweet soul.

Last but not least, putting hands on such an accomplished, beautiful and sweet mini mare is such a treat...she has an incredible educated owner who loves her to the moon and back!

While we provide routine, preventative care, we are most often called for intricate and challenging cases. We love solving a good mystery, especially when it leads to genuine relief and long-term wellness for the horse.

Most owners are taught that every 6โ€“12 months (and sometimes as often as every 3 months) they should call a โ€œdentistโ€ (often a dental technician or veterinarian) to float their horseโ€™s teeth. Floating has become so normalized as part of โ€œgood ownershipโ€ that when it isnโ€™t done, many owners feel guilty.

At Infinity Equine, we have spent years studying anatomy and physiology down to the cellular level. That depth of education has given us a very different perspective, one we feel compelled to share so we can help as many horses as possible.

Here is a fundamental truth that is often overlooked:

Horses have a limited supply of teeth for their lifetime. Once a tooth is floated away, it is gone forever.

Because of this, we approach dentistry with great care. Any time a tool is taken to a tooth, it must be in the horseโ€™s best long-term interest, not simply to make things โ€œlook evenโ€ in the moment.

What We Find in Over 90% of Horses We See

โ€ขMandible (jaw) misalignment
This is intricately related to the cranium, neck, and entire body. Often, the primary cause is trauma or the cause does not originate in the head. Even โ€œadjustingโ€ the mandible will not resolve the issue if the restriction exists elsewhere in the body.

โ€ขSensitivity at the poll
This is directly related to nerve innervation being compromised due to restrictions within the cranial and cervical structures.

โ€ขRounded teeth
Horses are meant to have a natural cutting edge. This develops through proper chewing mechanics that align with normal anatomy and physiology. Compromised horses often chew inefficiently and spit out forage.

โ€ขBit seats
Over-removal of the first premolars creates significant imbalance within the mouth. These teeth are often the first a horse loses due to excessive floating.

โ€ขNeglect of the incisors
True occlusal balance must include the incisors. When incisors are left long, it creates immense pressure, leads to "arthritis" of those teeth and prone to infection and pain.

โ€ขOver-floating of the incisors
This creates dysfunctions that affect not only the mouth, but the entire body.

โ€ขExcessive removal of premolars and molars, sometimes to the point of exposing the pulp chamber
This is extremely detrimental, exposes nerves, and is profoundly painful. Often the tooth becomes non-vital, cavities develop, and secondary issues such as sinus infections follow.

โ€ขFlattening of the teeth
Horse teeth are not meant to be flat. Natural ridging is essential for proper chewing and digestion.

โ€ขOver-corrections
These frequently lead to further discomfort, decompensatory patterns, and pain elsewhere in the body.

โ€ขTreating the teeth without understanding why the pathology exists
When the cause is not addressed, the pathology simply returns or the changes create additional decompensatory patterns.

Our Perspective
We believe a horseโ€™s anatomy, physiology, and mobility must be respected. To truly support healthy occlusion, the entire horse must be understood, not just the teeth.

Our clients consistently observe that when the cause restrictions are addressed and the horse becomes more adaptable from the inside out, the need for frequent dentistry changes. Horses begin to manage themselves more as nature intended.

Our Recommendation
We recommend regular assessments, at minimum once per year, and preferably every six months. This allows us to identify concerns early, support true prevention, and intervene only when it is genuinely necessary.
