"We have to interpret the Bible for our time." Have you ever heard someone make this claim?

In this clip from our "Is It Heresy?" episode, our theological team puts this popular phrase to the test. Is it a good statement, or is it dangerous? It really comes down to what you mean by the word "interpret."

It is incredibly important that we understand the Bible in light of our current cultural moment so we can apply its cardinal doctrines to the modern issues we face today. However, we have to be very careful that we are seeking to understand the scriptures, not reinterpret the core truths of Christianity to fit what culture wants us to believe.

Have you ever heard someone say, "Jesus never talked about doctrine. He just loved people"?
In this clip from our "Is It Heresy?" episode, our theological team puts this popular phrase to the test. While Jesus didn't write systematic theology textbooks, just about everything He did and said was actually applied doctrine!

The Apostle Paul got deeply into doctrine because he was trying to implement exactly what Jesus said. Through His ministry, Jesus was creating a completely new way of life and a new understanding of who God was. Trying to use the idea that "Jesus just loved people" to dismiss ourselves from the rich doctrine that Scripture has for us is a major mistake.

Does God actually forget your sins? In Part 3 of our "Is It Heresy?" series, Nick, Matthew, and the theological team tackle common Christian clichés with our red and green cards.

We break down the popular idea that "Jesus never talked about doctrine, He just loved people." Discover how everything Jesus said and did shapes our theology, and why moving away from biblical truth creates a shallow faith.
We also discuss what it really means to "interpret Scripture for our time." Explore the critical difference between applying unchanging doctrine to modern culture versus dangerously reinterpreting core truths. Plus, if God is all-knowing, what happens to our sin?

A Practical Tip for Your Faith:
When someone shares a confusing theological statement, don't jump into an argument. Instead, protect the conversation by asking two clarifying questions: "What do you mean by that?" and "What motivates you to say that?"

Did you know that being right before God has never been based on your ability to do enough good works?

Even through the Old Testament, salvation wasn't about earning it through behavior. Look at the story of Abraham in Genesis 15:6. The Scriptures tell us that he was justified before God not because of his behaviors, but simply because he believed God's promise. Because of his faith, God counted it to him as righteous!

Because God is a just God, the guilty ledger of sin must be paid. But justification means that when you believe in Jesus, God legally declares you righteous.

He doesn't just say you are good enough! It's like a courtroom where the judge looks at your guilty ledger, sees that Jesus has paid your fine on the cross, and completely clears your record. When God looks at you, he doesn't see your sin; He sees the perfect sinless track record of Jesus.

Are you exhausted by your own faith? If you know you are saved by grace, why does it still feel like you have to constantly prove your worth to God?

Most of us fall into the trap of a performance-based faith for two reasons:
1️⃣ Human Nature: We like tangible checklists more than the intangible reality of faith.
2️⃣ Bad Theology: We were taught a version of Christianity that acts like a strict legal ledger.

But when Jesus encountered religious leaders trapped in this exact same performance anxiety, He said something that completely shattered their worldview.

You don't have to panic about your salvation anymore.

"You need to forgive yourself before God can forgive you." Have you ever heard this popular phrase?
In this clip from our "Is It Heresy?" episode, we put this statement to the test. Treating self-forgiveness as a requirement for God's forgiveness seems like a violation of how salvation actually works because it tries to develop a different method of being saved.

There is a minute piece of truth to it, though: sometimes, an inability to forgive yourself puts you in a state of mind where you are simply unwilling to receive the grace of God. However, for the most part, the idea that God is waiting on you to forgive yourself before He steps in is just wrong!

"If you prayed the prayer, you're saved." Have you ever been told this?

In this clip from our "Is It Heresy?" episode, our theological team gives this popular phrase double red cards! While it is a common idea, treating salvation this way can actually lead to very bad theology.
It all comes down to the posture of your heart. If you are genuinely praying to receive Christ from the heart, that will save you. However, simply uttering the words of a specific prayer like it is some sort of magical incantation does not guarantee salvation. There is a massive difference between speaking words and truly giving your life to Jesus!
