This classic oriental folk deity, called Hotei in Japanese traditions, and Budai in Chinese, the "Laughing Buddha" in America was given to me 45 years ago by my sister and brother as a Christmas gift. Distinct from the Gautama Buddha, the meditation Buddha, this round, bald gentleman is thought to have been a Zen Buddhist monk. He traveled the Far East in the 10th century, spreading happiness and good fortune; a herald of contentment and good luck. For the past near half century he has traveled around the country with me, from NY to Florida, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Virginia and South Carolina.

In Japanese tradition, Hotei is considered one of the Seven Lucky Gods. In much of the Far East, statues of Hotei or Budai are thought to bring good fortune and felicity to the household or business. Statues of Laughing Buddha are thought to bestow wishes if the belly is rubbed while the supplicant, with pure heart, makes a silent wish.

He had seen quite a bit of wear and battering. His foot had been broken for more than 40 years. The hole near his neck happened in 2014.

With loving care, Lou glued and patched and repainted my Laughing Budai, restoring him to his natural beauty where he will now take a prominent place in our home.
