Update from Health Coach Trace-a little tiny MICROSCOPIC parasite-
Important Alert: Cyclospora Outbreak Affecting 31 States
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed 843 cases of Cyclospora infection across 31 states, with estimates suggesting the true number may be significantly higher—potentially closer to 5,000. Michigan alone has reported 1,562 confirmed cases, which is approximately 31 times the state’s typical annual total.
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite transmitted through fecal-oral contamination of food or water. Common symptoms include watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, prolonged fatigue, weight loss, and recurring cycles of illness that can persist for weeks or months if not properly addressed.
Foods historically associated with Cyclospora outbreaks include cilantro, basil, raspberries, mesclun greens, and snow peas. The source of the current outbreak has not yet been identified.
KEY INFORMATION THAT IS OFTEN OVERLOOKED:
In July 2025, the CDC scaled back FoodNet-the primary surveillance system for foodborne illnesses-and made monitoring for Cyclospora voluntary. This reduction in active surveillance limits the ability to quickly trace and contain outbreaks.
Additionally, standard stool tests frequently miss Cyclospora! Accurate detection typically requires a specific modified acid-fast staining or PCR test, which must be requested by your healthcare provider. Many individuals with persistent watery diarrhea who were told their tests were negative have simply not been tested for this parasite.
A Terrain-Focused Perspective (really think on this :))
Parasites are not fringe or rare concerns-they are a recognized reality in clinical practice. Many of my clients in chronic condition management have dealt with various parasitic infections. They are common, and they continue to appear in the food supply chains of developed nations.
The central question is not whether exposure occurs, but whether your body’s INTERNAL TERRAIN is equipped to handle it. A resilient defense relies on:
A balanced and diverse gut microbiome
Adequate stomach acid production
Healthy bile flow and digestive function
Open drainage and elimination pathways
An intact intestinal mucosal barrier
While the wellness industry promotes many gut-support supplements, these alone cannot fully compensate for a compromised terrain. True protection comes from supporting your body’s foundational systems.
Practical Steps to Support Your Health:
Wash all produce thoroughly under running water
Cook fruits and vegetables when possible, especially during outbreaks
If you are experiencing ongoing or unexplained gut symptoms (such as persistent diarrhea, fatigue, or cramping), speak with your provider about testing specifically for Cyclospora and other parasites or pathogens
