A pediatric exam can include a lot of important things, but it can also include laughing, joking around, and having a little fun!

This is a small glimpse into what our visits can look like behind the scenes. I may be checking vital signs and completing an exam, but I’m also working to make the experience feel less intimidating and a lot more comfortable whether it be in the office or at home.

Kids are not robots who simply sit still while we do a checklist. They’re people with big personalities, big feelings, and their own unique way of showing up 😅

Sometimes the best way to get through an exam is to meet them where they are—and join in on the fun!

PSA: Water activities can QUICKLY turn dangerous.

Mix in distraction, under-estimation of even inches of water depth, drinks, and heat can lead to disaster. Always have someone in charge of watching the kids, or hire a cheap private lifeguard. You can never be over-prepared around water!

Snackables part 3 😎 gagging vs choking?!

Starting foods can be anxiety inducing- I won’t lie. But gagging is quite normal and protective! Try to stay calm and pat their back so feeding doesn’t become scary for them.

Choking is the opposite- and knowing what to do is really important. Infant and child choking and CPR classes really don’t have a substitute- so be prepared ahead of time.

Dechoking devices- a good backup but can cause trauma to the airway.

How did you feel when you started feeding and your baby gagged?

Cyclospora Outbreak Update 🚨

The SECOND cyclospora cluster 😞

Separate from the Taco Bell/lettuce one — FDA just opened a brand-new traceback on 72 cases with the source still unidentified. Announced July 23 by Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas. Active traceback. Not the iceberg lettuce cluster but possibly linked to herbs (at least here in NC).

❌ No product named. No states listed. No deaths reported. If your kiddo's got a stomach bug that won't quit, mention Cyclospora at the pediatrician — standard stool tests miss it.Will update once FDA names the source.

Snackables part 2: what kind of foods are important for new feeders? 💪

Iron rich foods! Though iron is important for all babies, it’s particularly important for breastfeeding babies. Most pediatricians screen for anemia at a year. Of those that are anemic, by far and away the vast majority are due to iron deficiency anemia. So make sure you cycles these food in!

Another easy way to increase iron in the diet is by cooking with cast iron (we’re fan favorites of Smithey Ironware over here- from my home town of CHS 😅).

What is your baby’s favorite iron rich foods?

🚨 Cyclospora update for those who NEED to know 👉

There is a lot swirling around with the recent (and growing!) outbreak across the country- and a lot of it is untrue.

Since May 1, the CDC has confirmed 1,600+ U.S. cases (and counting). The big spreaders? Fresh produce doing exactly what fresh produce does: being fresh.

Here’s the 60-second parent version ⤴
🌿 What Cyclospora actually is
🤒 The symptoms worth watching for
❌ Viral “tricks” that sound smart but aren’t (the vinegar-wash thing is one of them)

The honest truth: scrubbing your raspberries harder is not a strategy. Cooking produce to 158°F actually kills the parasite. And if your little one’s been down with watery diarrhea for a while — talk to your pediatrician.

Save it for the next grocery run. Then send it to the parent friend!

Snackables part 1: is your baby ready for solids?

Feeding used to start at 6mo, but now we’ve realized that many kids are ready to start somewhere between 4-6 months. I usually see 2 camps- one that is eager to start and another that’s nervous as all get out. The key here is feeding in the 4-6 month window should be no pressure and fun. Don’t expect your baby to start weaning off of breastmilk or formula during this stage. 6 months is where the real work begins!

For me, the 4 month visit is one of the longer ones. In addition to talking a lot about feeding, we address sleep regressions, teething, and how the transition to work is going. There is A LOT going on around this time- and we’re here to really support our families.

When did your baby start the transition?
