Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 13

Genesis 28:1-29:35
Matthew 9:18-38
Psalm 11:1-7
Proverbs 3:11-12

Pray: Pray for revelation, not just information. Your story can be found within today’s reading in some capacity. We all need some kind of healing, and we all struggle with significance. We want our lives to matter. Jacob has a dream which is really God’s dream for him but a greater dream for humanity. Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, will be the father of many nations and from him will come the 12 tribes, and from one of these tribes the Messiah would come.

Read: Here are personal stories of romance, family feuds, and Jesus’ passion for the lost to know there is a Gospel of Good News. Jesus heals and brings hope to persons who are struggling. What is God saying to you today?

Edify: We all seek significance and meaning. Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah. The story of Jacob and Rachel is one of the great love stories of the Bible, while the story of Leah is very sad in so many ways. What person has not felt some rejection or displacement among her or his peers at some time? Leah is heartbroken that her husband will not find favor in her though she has given him three sons. Notice in verse 35 of Genesis 29 “She named him Judah, for she said, ‘Now I will praise the Lord!’ And then she stopped having children.” Leah had tried to please her husband by giving him sons, but his love for Rachel was greater than his compassion for Leah. Jacob is not her God. So Leah teaches us a valuable life lesson, “Praise and worship the Lord God above all else.” When Leah praised the Lord and put God above Jacob she gave birth to another son whose name is Judah. From the line of Judah comes King David, and Jesus the Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Practice: Seeking significance is a natural and innate desire of most people. Why? God put us here to live into our purpose. When we are living into God’s purpose for our lives, then our lives are more fulfilled. Jacob’s life was not to be lived for his own purposes—God was bringing forth a people who would worship Him and from Jacob and Judah would come the Messiah to bring salvation to the entire world. Likewise, Jesus tells us in Matthew’s Gospel that there is a harvest and the workers are few. You and I will never experience greater meaning and purpose than when we partner with God to help people find their way home to salvation in Jesus Christ. We don’t want people we care for to have a Christ-less eternity. Every follower of Christ needs to be conscious to invite persons to worship regularly and to pray for the unchurched we know. Who is on your list?

Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 11

Genesis 24:52-26:16
Matthew 8:18-34
Psalm 10:1-15
Proverbs 3:7-8

Pray: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you insight as you read God’s Word today. Pray that as you read the dysfunctions of Isaac and Jacob’s family you will also be encouraged that these were also persons whom God worked through to fulfill His purpose.

Read: Our Old Testament lesson tells of a war within a family which has the victor fleeing from his family. Yet, God brings redemption in due time. Jesus, in Matthew’s Gospel, calms the waves in the midst of the storm allowing us to realize that Jesus is more powerful than the storms which come our way.

Edify: Abraham married again after Sarah, had even more children, and died “at a ripe old age of 175.” Isaac marries Rebekah and they have twins who “war within the womb”. Interesting how the Spirit reveals to Rebekah that the younger of the twins would rule over the first born one day. When you read the story, it is shocking to learn that Esau sells his birthright for a bowl of stew. Seems so foolish until we consider how so many of us sell out our “birthrights” for cheap. We cheat on taxes. We inflate numbers at work to appease the boss. We have affairs which damage our marriages and destroy our families all for false security or some immediate pleasure. What ultimately matters to you and what is “not for sale in your life?”

Practice: Not only does nature yield to Jesus, but the forces of darkness and evil must yield to His voice as the demons are cast out. Perhaps you and I should say along with the disciples, “Who is this man…. even the winds and waves obey Him!” Perhaps we should obey Him as well. What is the Holy Spirit calling you to do today which would enable you to love God and love people today?

Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 9

Genesis 20:1-22:24
Matthew 7:15-29
Psalm 9:1-12
Proverbs 2:16-22

Pray: Wow, as you pray, think about how the stories in today's reading are rich with God’s promise being fulfilled through the birth of Isaac by his 90 year old mother and 100 year old father. Is there anything too big for God? You are under this covenant if you are a follower of Jesus Christ. So, ask God today to open your understanding and give you new insight as you read the text.

Read: Today’s reading is full of complexity with a beautiful promise fulfilled for two elderly people of God and then a test which seems quite unfair in light of the promise being fulfilled. Why on earth would God give a gift to Abraham and Sarah in their old age of a son and then take him away through a pagan-like sacrifice? We have to read the text with covenant in mind and sacrifice. The sacrifice which Abraham was willing to make was to determine who Abraham truly worshiped and put first in his life. As you read this story you may entertain this question, “What or who would you give up for God? Would you leave family and familiar surroundings to go wherever God would send you?” Abraham did when he left the home of his father.

Edify: Abraham does take Isaac up to the top of the mountain and he is willing to sacrifice him there if this is what the Lord requires. This is also believed to be the future foundation for the Temple in Jerusalem. When God sees his unyielding trust, God sends the angel to withdraw His request of Abraham. This seems very cruel on the part of God. Yet, it is also true that far too many people, even today, worship their children over God. The children even know it and often rule the home and lives of their parents. Instead of giving the children a bedrock of faith and allegiance to God, parents will put their children’s sports and extracurricular activities above worship and service to Christ. God wanted to know if the one whom He had chosen to be the father of the Hebrew faith would actually put God first in all things. Do you put God first in all things?

Practice: Jesus gives us definitive guidance here to build our spiritual and physical homes upon “my words” and to “do them”. If we listen and build our faith upon Christ’s teaching, then we build our lives and our homes upon the rock. If we ignore the words and instructions of Jesus, then we build our homes and lives upon the sand. The foundation will crumble when the storms of life hit it and the storms will come, you can count on it. What words or teachings from this passage will you act upon today? What will you put in place? Let’s build a solid foundation!

Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 8

Genesis 18:16-19:38
Matthew 6:25-7:14
Psalm 8:1-9
Proverbs 2:6-15

Pray: Jesus gives us permission today in the reading to seek, keep knocking, and to keep asking. Seldom do we believe that God really wants to hear from us, but He does. So ask boldly today for God to meet the needs of you and your family. Intercede for others who may be struggling with physical, emotional or spiritual needs.

Read: As you read today’s passage we notice that Abraham intercedes for his nephew Lot. As you read, it may be shocking to realize that God will not destroy the city, and He doesn’t want to destroy the city. If God can find 50, 40, 30, 20 or even 10 righteous people in S***m and Gomorrah, He will spare the city. God is just, but look for ways the Lord reveals that He is still merciful. Look to see that the Lord’s will is still done though Lot negotiates for other things.

Edify: The two angels appear to answer the prayer of Abraham to spare Lot and his family from the destruction which is coming to S***m. The sin is so great and outlandish among the men of S***m that they want to have s*x with the angels. As we read that Lot asked to be sent to another town we quickly understand that God is only destroying S***m for its great depravity. Why just S***m and the villages around it? Why not other towns which must have some sin, as all people sin? God did not destroy S***m because it had sin. God destroyed S***m because it sanctioned sin! S***m and Gomorrah called good evil and evil was called good. S***m sanctioned all forms of s*xual sins and God cannot tolerate the sanctioning of any sin. The passage does show a merciful God but not one who tolerates the sanctioning of sin.

Practice: Jesus teaches us to boldly and persistently share the concerns of our heart to a compassionate God. Moreover, Jesus gives us one of the greatest principles in governing relationships with family, marriages, communities and even nations: “Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. This is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” Today let us practice the “Golden Rule” as we seek to honor others as we want to be honored and to value others as we want to be valued.

Christ Church's Guide to 21 Days of Fasting and Praying
Day 2
📷
📷
Day Two
Read Isaiah 58: 3 ‘We have fasted before you!’ they say. ‘Why aren’t you impressed? We have been very hard on ourselves, and you don’t even notice it!’ “I will tell you why!” I respond. It’s because you are fasting to please yourselves. Even while you fast, you keep oppressing your workers.”
Fasting and Prayer is observed to focus our attention on God, not to get God to notice us. Fasting and Prayer should be focused upon pleasing God not trying to get God to be pleased with us. There is a huge difference. Our passion should be centered in loving God. We will look at the ten commandments differently if we see them in light of a relationship. We don’t keep the law because we fear the consequences—though sin always does have consequences, but we observe the ten commandments because we simply love God. If you love God you would never take His name in vain, and observing the Sabbath day would not be a chore because you can’t wait to spend time with someone you love---if we really loved God then we couldn’t wait to get to a worship service.
How’s your attendance lately? The Lord longs to see you regularly in worship.

21 Days of Fasting with Christ Church

“When I pray, coincidences happen. When I don’t pray, they don’t happen.” Archbishop of Canterbury, William Temple

Mission 20:21

“I have had one message for Jews and Greeks alike—the necessity of repenting from sin and turning to God, and of having faith in our Lord Jesus.” Acts 20:21

Christ Church’s Guide to “21 Days of Fasting and Prayer”

A Wesleyan Understanding of Fasting and Prayer
John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, preached and printed a sermon based upon Matthew’s account of Jesus’ teaching on fasting and prayer. The Sermon is Sermon XXVII Upon Our Lord’s Sermon on the Mount. The scripture is Matthew 6:16-18. The essence of the sermon is not to make too much of fasting nor should it be ignored. Fasting can be a means of God’s grace working in our lives as we seek to hear from God through this simple act of denying physical need for spiritual gain.
Wesley wrote about fasting, “It is not all, nor yet is it nothing. It is not the end, but it is a precious means thereto; when it is duly used, he will surely give us his blessing.” Sermon XXVII Jackson’s Works, p. 344

Fasting
By participating in this experience, you will be in good company. Moses the Law Giver, Elijah the great prophet, and Jesus our Savior all fasted and prayed for 40 days. Why? Were they not already advanced in their walk with God when they began their fasting? Yes, they were—this is why they submitted themselves to this spiritual discipline so God could reveal more of Himself and His direction for them and those they led.
Fasting literally means to abstain from food. In some passages in the Bible you will read the story of Moses, “he ate and drank nothing” (Exodus 34:28) Some observe a 24 hour fast, the most popular is a 40 hour fast, while some will endure a 72 hour fast and only drink liquids.
In the early church, Christians would fast on Wednesday and Friday by not eating any breakfast nor lunch. They would only drink water or other liquids during their fast. The next form of fasting is abstaining from pleasing food or a full meal. In other words, you would just eat toast and some protein with no flavoring or condiment. Daniel observed a form of abstaining from certain foods in the Book of Daniel as God revealed Himself in this fasting from fatty meats, etc.
During the 21 Days of Fasting and Prayer, beginning January 6 through January 27, some of the worshippers at Christ Church will participate in a true 21 Days of fasting by not eating after the evening meal until the next evening meal—a full 23 to 24 hour fast each day. The exception would be on Sunday when the Sunday lunch after worship can be observed.

Praying: Mission 20:21 “One Message—People Knowing Christ”
There are many forms of prayer. There are prayers of lamentation, tears, confession, adoration, petition, intercession, sacramental, and unceasing prayer just to name a few.
During the 21 Days of Fasting & Prayer we will focus upon Petition and Intercession. Both forms of prayer can be powerful experiences, which draw us close to God during our time of fasting. In the fasting experience we open ourselves up to hearing from God due to our posture of obedience and in our prayer time we listen to God through the reading of Scripture and listening.
1) Petition: During the 21 Days praying for Personal Dreams
In Luke 11—Jesus gave us permission “knock and the door will be open, seek and you will find, ask and it will be given to you.” Prayers of petition are expected from God for He knows we have needs. What are your personal dreams? Mark Twain once said, “Most men die at 27 we just bury them at 72”. Do you have a personal vision statement about your life—where you want God to take you?
2) Intercession: Praying for others—Praying for God’s Dream for Christ Church
In Hebrews Jesus intercedes for each of us, “25 Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf.” We are called to pray and intercede for one another. In addition, we are called to pray even for our enemies according to Jesus’ own words in the Sermon on the Mount.

Mission 20:21 is all about praying for the unchurched, for those who have yet to belong. Praying for others is one of the most important forms of ministry and compassion we can engage in. Pray for the unchurched, to pray for those struggling with drugs, finances, and relationships.
What do you pray for during the 21 Days of Fasting & Prayer? We will have two focuses: God’s Dreams for you Personally and God’s Dream for Christ Church
Personal Dreams—During the 21 Days ask God?
1) Personal needs—what do I need to become physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy? (Exercise, watching what I eat, reading Bible daily, counseling?)
2) How is God moving already in my life? What is God asking me to do by the prompting of His Spirit? (Has God been nudging you to get involved, to serve someone, to initiate reconciliation and you have resisted? How is God working already in your life?)
3) What Dreams do you have for your life? What is God calling you to do to find fulfillment through Him? Challenge yourself to write out your personal dream or vision statement. Example, “To be a loving spouse, a leader in the lives of my children, and to encourage my unchurched friends to try Jesus by living a sold-out life for God.”

Intercession: God’s Dream for Christ Church—Where is God taking CC over the next 3 to 5 years?

God’s Vision—Ask God three questions in the 21 Days of Mission 20:21
1) What are the biggest needs in our community? (Is it broken homes, marriages, poverty, drugs, illiteracy, students & children needing mentoring, jobs, etc.)
2) How is God already at work in our community?
(Where do you currently see God moving and how can we join Him? Bless what He is already doing?)
3) Considering Christ Church’s Mission Statement—what is God’s Dream for Christ Church over the next 3 to 5 years? In order to reach the unchurched and develop fully devoted followers of Christ.
a) Christ Church as a whole—all campuses?
b) Specifically praying for each campus’ focus & mission:
Lincolnton Campus: Have Drawings for a 9,000 sq. ft. facility. Our Mission 20:21 Campaign will help the Lincolnton Campus build its first permanent facility.

Northside Campus: Further Expansion of outreach on Northside of Catawba County and beyond. Growing Children, Student and Life Group Ministries.

Mt. View Campus: On and Off Ramp at 321 & Sandy Ford Rd., expansion of New Student Center & Student Ministry.

Fairgrove Campus: Reaching Newton/Conover area for Christ, growth in Children’s, Student and Life Groups & maximizing facilities.

Statesville Campus: Greater visibility in northern Iredell County, maximizing use of facilities to equip followers of Christ.

Gastonia Mission: Praying for continued outreach in Gaston County, to serve the immediate community, launch a Celebrate Recovery soon and meeting “Benchmarks” to launch a new campus in 2021.

Day One: Doing it Right—With the Right Motivation
Day One
Read: Exodus 34: 28-29
28 Moses remained there on the mountain with the Lord forty days and forty nights. In all that time he ate no bread and drank no water. And the Lord wrote the terms of the covenant—the Ten Commandments—on the stone tablets. 29 When Moses came down Mount Sinai carrying the two stone tablets inscribed with the terms of the covenant, he wasn’t aware that his face had become radiant because he had spoken to the Lord.
Motivation can be a powerful tool. A dream can be even more powerful as the dream begins to stir the heart towards a goal. God motivated Moses to lead the people of Israel out of bo***ge, out of slavery, so they could worship God on the mountain. God, through a relationship, allowed Moses to learn what was at stake.
Nothing is more motivational than learning what is at stake. Moses knew that if the people of Israel were going to experience freedom, to be able to worship God in freedom then he had to do something.

Key—Moses spent 40 days with God that his outward appearance began to change in vs. 29. When you and I humble ourselves during this 40-Day Journey and spend time with God we will begin to notice an inward change.

Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 6

Genesis 13:5-15:21
Matthew 5:27-48
Psalm 6:1-10
Proverbs 1:29-33

Pray: Pray for a year of new beginnings. Today’s Old Testament story is one of new starts. Abram is taking a new territory and is gracious in allowing Lot to select the land he desires to inhabit. Pray for God’s discernment that He will direct your path in 2021 and give you insight as you read today’s scripture.

Read: As Abram takes the new ground God makes a way so His will is accomplished through Abram and Lot. Today ask the Holy Spirit to open understanding in the Old and New Testament lessons as Jesus is very practical in instructing us how to pray, how to forgive, how to hold fast to covenantal forms of relationships like marriage and love of our neighbors.

Edify: Abram exemplifies servant leadership which seeks to focus upon God’s purpose and Abram is not seeking selfish pursuits. In fact, when Abram is victorious in the battle with the enemy he does two powerful acts of selfless spiritual leadership: 1) He immediately tithes ten percent of his income to God by giving it to the priest Melchizedek in Genesis 14:20 (this is before the Law of Moses even speaks about the command to tithe) and 2) Abram refuses the generous offering from the king of S***m believing that others might one day say, “The king of S***m made Abram rich”. Abram wanted others to know that God had blessed Abram and is powerful enough to bless anyone who puts the Lord first.

Practice: Jesus gives strong advice in Matthew about honoring our commitments to family, spouses in marriage, and how to more effectively love our enemies saying, “If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that?” Wow, Jesus just challenged each of us to go the extra mile in learning to love our enemies and pray for those who seek to do evil against us. Perhaps today’s practice is to write down the names of those who have hurt us, who have broken our trust, who have disappointed us and ask God to bless them and bring them closer to the love of Jesus Christ so we might “be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect."

Today's One Year Daily Bible Reading:

January 5

Genesis 11:1-13:4
Matthew 5:1-26
Psalm 5:1-12
Proverbs 1:24-28

Pray: Today is a day of unity and confusion. Any confusion in your life? Any chaos? You should be able to relate to today's story both in Genesis and Matthew. So pray that God would help eliminate any confusion or chaos in your life and bring compassion and clarity.

Read: Read this story and try to see yourself in the story in some capacity. God has a loving message for you and me in these words. Especially read slowly the Matthew text called the Beatitudes for there is much encouragement here.

Edify: Sometimes I think the world would be totally different if it weren't for people. I know, that was a bad joke, but we are often so proud and so stubborn. It is a wonder God has ever put up with us this long. Here we find folks trying to build their own kingdom and hear these words, "Make themselves famous". I thought the purpose of loving and following God was to make His name famous and not our own. So, to cut to the quick, how have I engaged in similar behavior and tried to make my name famous while neglecting the very person of Jesus Christ?

Practice: Jesus says that those who engage in peacemaking and thirst for God will find numerous blessings. So, how can you and I on this very day seek to be more than a fan of Jesus by making His name famous in how we live our lives before others? Will we practice peacemaking? Will we thirst for righteousness? Even when people persecute us we must take confidence, for our reward will not be on this earth but Jesus has promised plenty in heaven.
