Hello everyone!!
Welcome back to Field Day Boutique’s educational series: Only Our Facts Are Straight!
Today we are discussing emergency contraception. Let’s get some things straight:
1. Emergency contraception is NOT the same as abortion. We love abortion, but it is simply a different topic for a different day.
2. IUDs (intrauterine devices) are the most effective forms of emergency contraception. Both the copper IUD and at least two brands of hormonal (levonorgestrel—Mirena and Liletta) IUDs have been studied for use as highly effective emergency contraceptives. You can have them removed whenever you want if you do not wish to continue using an IUD for further contraception. Planned Parenthood in Charlottesville is a knowledgeable provider for IUD-as-EC insertions. You can also call your doctor and ask questions.
3. Plan B and other over-the-counter EC pills are likely not very effective if you weigh over 165lbs. The lack of development for EC pills for heavier people is one example of how medical fatphobia is systemic and harmful. Remember that our struggles are all intertwined.
4. Taking birth control pills as EC is likely to make you throw up, which might mean it doesn’t work. If you’re in this situation, you might consider looking into an anti-nausea medicine prior to use. Lots of people think it’s really neat that birth control pills can be used off-label this way, but it’s honestly not an ideal option if you have other choices.
5. Misinformation and disinformation shape our legal system. Stay informed, and tell your friends.
