Listening to the complex symphony of birds, insects, frogs, wind, people, and the river of cars that flows through my suburban food forest, I look around and see beauty, balance, and opportunities for shaping, nurturing, and guiding my land into the vision I have in my heart.
And so too do I feel my way through today, Juneteenth, in the middle of Pride month.
I remember our history of colonization, enslavement, subjugation, torture. I remember all of the progress that has been made and all of the freedoms that have been won. I see all of the fear and harm that is happening in our world today. I see the fascists attempting to claim our country, remove our freedoms, and destroy the very environment that allows us to live and to thrive.
And also I see the beauty and kindness between strangers, neighbors, friends, and families. I see the inspiring acts of people speaking out, growing gardens to feed each other, extending helping hands, and turning out to vote.
History shows us that together, we the people are unstoppable. Let us stand united for freedom, justice, equity, love and a better future for us all.
Wishing you a happy Juneteenth and sending you all my love.
