The New Moon represents both the end and the beginning of a lunar cycle. During the time of the Dark Moon, Grandmother disappears from our view and although we may not always realize it, we can feel the effects of this, just as we notice changes during a full moon. We may feel blocked as the moon is essentially blocked from our view. We may feel heavy and dark or moody. We may feel fatigued or simply not interested in socializing. Our appetite and energy may change. All this until the new Crescent appears, marking the beginning of a new cycle when we may notice that all the emotional crises begin to ease as we move closer and closer to the light of the full moon.
Women are more likely to notice these effects as they are closely related to the menstrual phase of a woman’s cycle. Just as women may experience more mental, emotional, physical and spiritual harmony when they are in alignment with the inevitable fluxuations, we can all experience more harmony during the New Moon by going with the flow of this powerfully renewing energy. We can all give ourselves space to rest, go within and listen to what our bodies are asking for. We can all release something that no longer brings us joy or peace. We can all, however temporarily, surrender to the darkness and experience the miracle of energetic rebirth.
Ever do a New Moon Ritual? If not, why not try it? We could all use a Reset. All it takes is your intention and a little imagination. You don’t even need much space to create an altar or sacred space like this one (made from a former plant stand) where you can be alone. Yes, you can even do it in the bathroom if that’s your only private, or most comfortable space. You can certainly incorporate a ritual bath or shower too!
Not sure how to set up a sacred space? There’s no right or wrong way, but it’s a good idea to start by representing the elements of AIR, WATER, FIRE AND EARTH. More than just their physical expressions, these items represent the energetic power present within them, the power that ultimately manifests into our physical plane. ETHER or space is always present around you, but you could include some personally spiritual items or symbols to represent the All That Is. Consider including pictures of loved ones or artwork to represent an emotion or state of being you want to connect with or embody. Here we’ve chosen a Oaxacan xilografía, or hand-carved print, titled ‘Sacrificio’ (Sacrifice) by because it reminds us that although we may energetically “die” at the end of a cycle, and that can be painful or uncomfortable, it ultimately paves the way for more expanded energy and experience to come in. This is also a great time for divination tools like a pendulum, tarot cards or I Ching to help you sort through the heavy energy and figure out what is weighing you down.
Perhaps most importantly, you want to include something for energy clearing. We are really feeling mugwort lately and have some hanging around (thank you Elijah! ) and burning (called moxa - used in TCM to move energy around the body). Crystals can also be a beautiful addition to any sacred space if you connect with them. Dark crystals like Black Tourmaline absorb negative energy that may be encouraging negative thoughts, feelings or habits. Selenite is one of the most powerful crystals to bring lighter, brighter energy to your space and it will cleanse the other crystals you place on or near it. You can also burn incense or scented oils and complete the ambiance with light music that resonates with your heart, we recommend something rhythmic and soul-touching rather than radio hits. Try dancing like nobody's watching, crafting, coloring or anything that allows you to express your creativity. That will help transmute any stuck or overactive energy within you that may be manifesting as icky feelings. Be sure to hydrate and have fun with it!
