AI is beginning to reshape how neurosurgeons diagnose, plan, and perform complex procedures.

A new ACS Bulletin cover story explores how emerging technologies are being used to analyze imaging, personalize spine surgery planning, support robotic-assisted procedures, and provide real-time guidance in the operating room.

While experts caution that more research is needed to validate many of these tools, the goal remains the same: helping surgeons make better-informed decisions and deliver more precise, individualized care.

For many rural patients, cancer care can mean traveling long distances to access specialists and treatment.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer has launched a new Rural Cancer Accreditation category to help expand access to high-quality cancer care in rural communities.

About 1 in 5 Americans live in rural areas, where cancer death rates are approximately 15% higher than in urban communities. This new pathway is designed to help more rural hospitals strengthen their cancer programs and provide coordinated, evidence-based care closer to home.

The ACS is committed to supporting stronger cancer care programs so more patients can receive care close to home.

The American College of Surgeons is proud to honor Christian P. Larsen, MD, DPhil, FACS, as the recipient of the 2026 Jacobson Innovation Award.

Dr. Larsen is being recognized for pioneering work that transformed organ rejection prevention. His research led to the development of belatacept, the first costimulation blocker medication created specifically for kidney transplant patients, helping improve outcomes for patients who depend on lifesaving transplants.

Today, his work continues through ongoing investigations into how the immune system recognizes transplanted organs and how new approaches may further improve long-term transplant success.

Join us in congratulating Dr. Larsen on this achievement! 🎉

Earlier this year, three ACS Fellows at UChicago Medicine led one of the rarest procedures in modern transplantation: a simultaneous bilateral lung, liver, and kidney transplant for a 28-year-old woman with advanced cystic fibrosis.

Believed to be the first procedure of its kind in Illinois and only the sixth reported in the US, the operation required extraordinary coordination across thoracic surgery, transplant surgery, and critical care teams.

The successful case highlights the continued importance of transplantation for select patients with advanced cystic fibrosis and demonstrates how multidisciplinary collaboration can help achieve positive outcomes in even the most complex cases.
