“1,200 calories is for toddlers” is one of the most annoying things people keep repeating on the internet right now.
A toddler is literally growing…fast. Their calorie needs relative to their body size are much higher than yours. Comparing their calorie intake to that of a fully grown adult makes absolutely no sense.
Here’s what people seem to forget: calorie needs aren’t the same for everyone.
A woman who’s 5’0”, has a smaller body, and sits at a desk all day is not going to burn the same number of calories as someone who’s 5’8” and lifting weights 5 days a week.
For some smaller, sedentary women, 1,200 calories MAY be an appropriate calorie deficit for weight loss.
Does that mean everyone should eat 1,200 calories? NO.
Does that mean 1,200 is automatically appropriate just because you’re short? Also no.
Your age, height, weight, activity level, health, and nutritional needs all matter.
And we’re talking about a calorie deficit here, not necessarily what you should be eating forever. The goal is to lose fat at a reasonable pace, get enough nutrients, and eventually eat at maintenance.
I’m also not encouraging anyone to go below 1,200 calories.
Can we please stop turning general nutrition advice into absolute rules that supposedly apply to every single person?
Context matters. Individual calorie needs matter. And being louder on the internet doesn’t make something scientifically accurate.
