Neighbors, have you ever stopped into the Darou Salam Halal Market? Located between the The Park Diner and Shake It Records, this is a great little specialty grocer that offers a good selection of basics as well!

This small Senegalese store at 4158 Hamilton Ave. is packed almost to the ceiling with groceries, including canned and dry beans, rice, pasta, grains, canned goods, flours, oils, tinned meats and fish, sauces, teas, and spices. Butter ghee, Malta Goya soda, laksa paste, canned mackerel, and millet are just a few of the unusual ingredients you can find here.

A cooler and freezer offer up frozen meats and fish, pitas, dates, juices, sausage, frozen vegetables, and dairy products. Limited fresh produce is also available!

Our cookbook, Cooking from the Heart of Northside, is a true labor of love that comes straight from the community, providing a variety of simple, heart-healthy recipes made with wholesome ingredients that come from area grocery stores, including Darou Salam Halal Market. You can order your copy on our website: www.heartofnorthside.org/cookbook

We offered our first cooking classes this summer in partnership with Working In Neighborhoods and the Cincinnati Health Department!

Participants learned about freezing, pickling and jamming in separate sessions with chef Theresa.

There was a lot of interest in these free community offerings. If you got to attend, what did you think? If you didn’t get to participate this time around, would you be interested in cooking classes this fall? If so, what specifically would you like to learn?

It’s an honor to bring the mobile market to the community as a complement to the Northside Farmers Market, Morsel & Nosh, Lierer's Market, and other area grocery options. This is just one important piece of the puzzle to improve the health of the community.

Eleven:11 photography did a great job of capturing the beautiful wedding of Liz and Josh that took place at the Heart of Northside!

Our sanctuary can comfortably fit approximately 200 seated guests. It is a glorious space with original curved pews, historic stained glass windows and our beloved organ. In the late afternoon, sunlight streams through the stained glass, creating a rainbow of color in this space!

Your reception can take place right in our gymatorium, with easy access to a commercial kitchen. There is also a VIP suite available for getting ready, or just as a chill zone.

What would you like to see at the Heart of Northside? The longterm goal is to prevent heart disease in Cincinnati by supporting the foundations of good health–fresh food and exercise–by creating a community garden, teaching kitchen and health center on site.

This broader goal encompasses many things, like events where the community comes together, specialized services like the Black men's support group hosted by PsychWorks Clinic LLC and the Healthy Harvest Mobile Market, which sells affordable produce and pantry basics.

What about acupuncture? Is that a service you'd like in the neighborhood? What else should be easily accessible in our central location?

In 2021, after 166 years, North Presbyterian Church was dissolved as a congregation and turned its historic building over to cardiologist Dr. Florence Rothenberg, who shares the church’s longstanding commitment to community collaboration.

The Heart of Northside continues some of the church’s traditions, like hosting the semiannual Northside Record Fair and regular AA and NA meetings.

We are forging some new traditions that include heart health events, organ recitals, nonpartisan “get out the vote” drives, and private events like weddings and other celebrations.

Last week, Dr. Rothenberg attended the unveiling of a new mural by Cedric Michael Cox on the side of Wyoming Community Coffee at 434 Springfield Pike in the Wyoming Ohio!

The theme for the mural project, "Love Lives Here," emerged from a powerful moment of solidarity following demonstrations by white nationalist groups near Lincoln Heights Elementary School. In response, residents and organizations, including the Wyoming Art Show and Wyoming Community In Action, came together to show students, families and neighbors that they are loved, valued and supported.

Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing this idea to life. This beautiful mural now serves as landmark, community gathering point and a source of local pride!

Check out our little bit of wilderness on Hamilton Ave.! Our pollinator garden greets pedestrians and bus riders in front of our facility, while helping to improve the pollinator population for gardens all over the neighborhood.

These plantings also support the ongoing effort to grow food for Northside right here, on and in the Heart of Northside. Pollinators in the community ensure that we can continue to have a vibrant, healthy ecosystem to support the growth of food for our community.

Thanks to medical student Ryan Goodson and his team of volunteers for planning, planting and tending to this effort!
