Pickleball is booming! Although it may be easier on the body than tennis, the quick bursts, lunges, direction changes, and repetitive swings can still put stress on your muscles, tendons, and joints.

Common pickleball-related injuries include:🏓 Shoulder pain🏓 Tennis elbow🏓 Calf strains🏓 Achilles irritation🏓 Knee pain🏓 Ankle sprains

So where does dry needling fit in?

Dry needling is one tool we use to help address areas of muscle tightness, sensitivity, and movement limitations that may be contributing to pain. When paired with appropriate sports dosing, it can help you move better, recover, and get back to doing what you enjoy.

Headaches are incredibly common — but that doesn’t mean you just have to accept them as something you “live with.”

Dry needling can be an excellent adjunct to the care you’re already pursuing, especially when muscle tension, trigger points, and movement impairments may be contributing to your symptoms.

That being said, headaches can have many different causes, and terms like “cervicogenic headache” and “migraine” are sometimes used loosely. A thorough evaluation is important to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and what approach is most appropriate.

As always, it’s best to discuss new, severe, changing, or persistent headaches with a qualified healthcare provider. For some individuals, dry needling may be most effective as part of a broader plan that includes medical evaluation and other forms of care.

If headaches are getting in the way of your daily life, there may be options worth exploring.

Ever wonder why some dry needles are connected to wires?

E-stim is similar to a TENS unit, but the current is delivered directly to the target muscle through the needles, allowing deeper tissue targeting with less tissue interference compared to surface stimulation.

Research suggests that adding e-stim to dry needling may improve pain and function, while often reducing post-treatment soreness compared to dry needling alone.

Low-frequency stimulation is commonly used for muscle-related pain. High-frequency stimulation is often used for nerve-related pain or for patients who prefer a gentler sensation.

When performed by a properly trained clinician and used in appropriate body regions, dry needling with e-stim is a safe treatment option.

➡️ Swipe to see low- vs. high-frequency stimulation, then check out the research on shoulder pain on the final slide.

As always, treatment is individualized—not every patient or condition requires electrical stimulation.

Hip pain that won’t go away? It’s not always just the joint.

Common sources include tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, muscle overuse, and movement compensation patterns—often leading to myofascial trigger points that can be a primary or contributing source of pain.

Dry needling may help by reducing trigger point activity, decreasing pain sensitivity, and improving muscle function to support better movement and rehab progress.

👉 Swipe to view a patient testimonial and see how addressing the “hidden drivers” of hip pain can make a difference.

Low back pain isn’t just “tight muscles”—it often involves irritated muscle tissue, sensitive nerves, and the way your body is protecting itself from pain.

Dry needling targets these deeper areas to help calm pain, reduce stiffness, and improve how your muscles turn on and work. When we add a gentle electrical stimulation (similar to TENS/estim), it can further help quiet pain signals and relax overactive muscles.

Because the needles can reach deeper layers than massage or stretching, it can be especially helpful when symptoms are stubborn or even when pain starts to refer or feel like it’s traveling into your buttocks or legs

Jaw pain isn't something you should just "live with."

TMJ-related pain can make everyday activities like chewing, eating, talking, singing, or even yawning uncomfortable. It can also contribute to headaches, ear pain, and tension around the face and neck.

Dry needling, combined with exercise and education, may help reduce muscle tension, improve jaw mobility, and get you back to doing the things you enjoy with less pain.

🎾 Tennis Elbow isn't just for tennis players.

Pain on the outside of the elbow during gripping, lifting, pulling, or weight-training activities is often referred to as Tennis Elbow (lateral epicondylalgia).

While the tendon attachment near the lateral epicondyle is commonly involved, surrounding muscles can also contribute to pain and dysfunction. In this case, treatment included dry needling of key forearm muscles, relative rest from aggravating activities, and a gradual return-to-loading program.

The goal: decrease pain, improve grip strength, and help the patient return to the activities that matter most.
