Another family members suffers......

Hit them where it hurts! Money! These stories are not rare anymore. Our policymakers need to have enforcement that stops these private investors and equity firms (many out of state) from making money off our family members suffering!

This is becoming the playbook of Long-Term Care. How sad this is the ending for too many, suffering and receiving inhumane care. The most crucial thing to change is public outcry. For it's up to each one of us to do our part to stop it.

Can you imagine how it feels to get a bonus because you saved money by allowing people to suffer and do without?

Patients are dying.

This was a horrible idea! But look what pushback emails did!!

It stopped it! Now, we must focus on Esther's Law and take out any involvement allowed by facilities, except protecting the privacy of roommates!

Let's do this; we can! We must!

This is what our loved ones face too many times in nursing homes that are run and owned by the worst. Their explanation of bad events is to blame the resident, such as"they fell out of the wheelchair," or it "happened in a common area, not in their room". They deny that most falls happen in rooms, but they do. They use more care so that no one falls out in common areas where it can be seen.

A very sad thing here is the employees being willing to write lies on paper. Just don't know how they sleep at night, lying to protect the nursing home. The good management runs when they see care like this, thus big turnovers. The ones that can live with covering up for the nursing home stay. And maybe the pay and benefits are better for that; who knows what motivates people to do the wrong thing when human lives are at stake.
Hats off to William Eadie for making them accountable and hitting them where it hurts, in their deep deep pockets!

After a nine-day trial, a Butler County jury found that Chesterwood Village and its corporate operators breached the standard of care, violated Ohio’s Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights, and proximately caused the death of Janice Combs. The jury also awarded punitive damages, a finding reser...

Please help save the camera law!

This is what you can do: it only takes a couple of minutes to write an email, and the email addresses are right below for you to send it to.

Please send an email to the reps listed below. If you are a constituent of any of these reps, let them know that. They want to know what is important to you and what help is needed. They helped the families with Esther's Law. It would be devastating to take out the things that made it work for families.
When you email, all you have to say is to keep Esther's Law as is. Do not change it to give nursing homes any rights over cameras.

The ombudsman tried to say today that SB154 gives the resident the option of letting the facility purchase the camera, WiFi and installation. You can see in this language it says "AND USE OF THE DEVICE" and it says this TWICE in this clause. Which means they can not charge you for using their camera that they purchased, installed and using their WiFi.

Stop them now.

Tell these sponsor of both Bills that we do not agree with the language to amend Esther's Law. Tell them you saw the Channel 5 news report.

Get your own Wi-Fi; many already are, and it works great! There is no reason for a facility to buy and control a camera. We have made it well known that Elderly Advocates can assist anyone who cannot afford a camera. Residents may very well have access to low-cost internet wherever they live. We have not seen any good reasons to change Esther's Law. None.

Many are tired of the Ohio Health Care Association running our laws. It is becoming more visible than ever. We have seen them have the final say; we have seen them get a seat at the table when advocates are denied one.

Just so you know, Paula saw the former Ohio Health Care Association Executive Director, Peter Van Runkle, put a stuffed "elephant on the table" at the Nursing Home Task Force meeting in Columbus that EA attended. We had to stay silent and could only put comments on a little piece of paper before we left; we opted out. One has to wonder whether the elephant is a reminder of the contributions the Ohio Health Care Association and some Nursing Home owners make to policymakers. Because we feel that is the elephant in the room no one wants to talk about.

There is little enforcement, and if there is any, it does not stop poor care; these cameras offer a chance to avoid a bad event or outcome. No one wants a lawsuit over their family member's suffering.

Families have been pushing back to stop the poor care the bad actors are giving. And now, again, they try to silence the voices that cannot be heard but are seen on camera, that are receiving poor care, being disrespected, and becoming so broken that they don’t remember what dignity is anymore.

How do some cater to bad actors in the long-term care industry that put profits over care of our most treasured family members? Can the Ohio health care industry be told, " No, you can’t have it all this time!
