Aidan's Army

Aidan's Army A team that supports Aidan; a little boy who had the first emergency live liver transplant at The Cleveland Clinic, and the American Liver Foundation Aurora Rd.

Saturday, September 1st, 2007 – Family and friends celebrated Aidan turning 1. It was a perfect day. Tuesday, September 4th, 2007 - Jeff returned home in the morning from his 24-hour shift as a Firefighter. He insisted that I was pregnant and sure enough after an EPT test we were celebrating. We made breakfast, and went in to get Aidan to celebrate with us. Aidan lay in his crib lethargic, jaundic

e and ashen gray, and unresponsive. We thought he was dead when Jeff lifted Aidan out of the crib. He barely opened his eyes when Jeff set him on the changing table. Jeff handed Aidan to me and called 911. The squad took us to Hillcrest. His vitals were very week, and he was cool to the touch. After 2 - 3 hours we were transported by med-flight to Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital PICU unit where we were informed he was in acute liver failure. Jeff nearly passed out and I just lost it. Aidan was put into an induced coma so his tiny body didn’t have to work as hard. Aidan had many different doctors from many specialties (GI, Nephrology, Infectious Disease, Transplant and Cardiology to name a few) working to try to 1) figure out why this was happening and 2) to figure out what was to be done. By Tuesday night Aidan was listed on the Transplant list. There was hope as his vitals and labs started to trend towards the better, but it turned gravely serious into the very early hours of Wednesday. Wednesday, September 5th , 2007 - Aidan almost lost the fight as the toxins from his liver was not only shutting down his kidneys and lungs (he was on a ventilator) but it went into his brain where it caused major swelling and we lost him. Thanks to the amazing staff they were able to revive him. After that they knew time wasn’t on our side. Aidan needed a transplant but doctors weren’t sure if his body could handle the lengthy surgery. By Wednesday evening Aidan was showing signs of strength but a matching deceased donor liver hadn’t been found. It was up to one of us to donate a portion of our liver. I was unable to as I was pregnant and the PICU/Transplant staff really didn’t want Jeff doing it. They felt the situation was to grave; with us potentially losing Aidan and then if Jeff was lost during surgery it would be a horrible situation for me and the unborn baby. Somehow Jeff and I walked into the waiting room of 20 people and asked if anyone was willing to donate. Due to some restrictions, and some that couldn’t, 12 people followed us into a room where a transplant surgeon was waiting to discuss the process and risks. 12 people!!! That is insane. God bless every single one of them. After much, but a quick debate, it was determined that my brother, Jeff Shoemaker, who was adamant about keeping Jeff (Diederich) out of harm’s way would be the one to give the gift of life. At 10pm he was taken to the 6th floor to pack in 6 weeks’ worth of testing in less than 8 hours. Thursday, September 6th, 2007 – Aidan was wheeled down for surgery around 6am. The surgery lasted 13 hours. Over 30 people waited with us for the procedure to finish and the Fire Department sent up dinner for everyone! At 7pm my mom and I were able to go see my brother as he was the first one out of surgery. It took awhile to get his pain managed; Jeff was in a tremendous amount of pain but was only concerned with Aidan's condition - Unbelievable! After that he seemed to be doing as good as one can in that situation. When Aidan was wheeled back to the PICU Jeff and I noticed Aidan’s color looked a lot better already! Post-Transplant - Aidan had a tough road ahead; since coming in extremely sick he required about a month (3+ weeks longer than the average) for his organs (new liver, kidneys, brain, etc) to heal and recover. Also, he was having issues with his bile duct which required 17 stents to help enlarge it (yep, a surgery every time) and numerous viruses. After about 18 months, with the majority spent in the hospital, Aidan came home. Because of the long stay Aidan has some developmental issues with speech and his eating took a dive. But with a lot of therapy and an IEP at school Aidan has come very far considering! With the help of God, surgeons, nurses, family, friends, co-workers, strangers, prayer and the amazing fight and determination of Aidan he is now 7 1/2 years post-transplant and doing well so to speak. Currently, Aidan gets monthly lab work done and will most likely be on several medications for the rest of his life. He still has set-backs with illness and stints in the hospital and he will be returning to the feeding clinic with some eatting issues; not eatting much, not gaining weight, etc. which for a child with his chronic illness is not a good thing. Aidan will be starting 2nd grade in the fall and is looking forward to it (yes, he loves school despite some of his struggles)

We have established a fund that people can donate towards if they so choose. The fund is available at any local KeyBank Branch. The name of the fund is The "Diederich-Shoemaker Liver Fund". Portions of the proceeds will also be donated to a charity; The Ronald McDonald house (where we stayed while Aidan was hospitalized), The American Liver Foundation, and LifeBanc. Donation Details

Yesterday marked...

16 years.

16 years ago today our lives changed forever.
I can't believe it has been that long already.

16 years ago we were on an emotional roller coaster.

16 years ago it was a beautiful sunny Tuesday morning and Jeff and I were celebrating the fact we just found out we were pregnant and going to be parents for a 2nd time. Happiness, joy and excitement all rolled into one.

16 years ago we had eggs, sausage, and toast for breakfast.

16 years ago we found Aidan almost lifeless in his crib. In just a few hours we would learn all the issues our little 1-year old boy was facing; Liver Failure, brain swelling, organs shutting down, and a whole list of other things.

16 years ago I prayed, begged, and pleaded like I never have before. I pulled from my faith and questioned my faith. I also held onto hope.

16 years ago we learned what amazing doctors, surgeons, nurses, and staff the Cleveland Clinic have

16 years ago we learned what a fighter Aidan is and how, as a parent, you just keep on keeping on. You listen, educate yourself, and try to make the best decision you can.

16 years ago we learned what friendship, family, and brotherhood truelly mean.

16 years ago my brother Jeff gave the greatest gift of all

16 years ago seems like yesterday.

Aidan Update:

Discharged!!!!

Sorry no update Saturday or Sunday.
Saturday was quiet and no test results came back so Aidan and Jeff (I had to bartend an event) hung out; played video games and bass. Sunday, my cousin from Pittsburgh came out to visit Aidan but then we were unexpectedly discharged, so they came over for the rest of the day to visit. We had a quick dinner and then were all asleep by 8p! We were all exhausted.

Aidan is on oral antibiotics for 8 days. MRI didn't show any narrowing of ducts but only a PCT can truly rule that in/out. If pain/ illness return, we will most like get a scope from IR with possible bile duct stent.

GI/ID really don't have an answers but are chalking it up to an unknown infection. There will be a couple more tests and a follow-up with GI/ID (probably on a Thursday) in a week or so.

Pray this is the answer!!

Aidan is back to school today and feels well. Though his 'Hope tomorrow for Snow Day' prep (ice in the toilet, pj's backwards, etc.) was cut short and we just had some snow/sleet for a short bit this a.m.

Thank you for all the prayers, texts, calls, etc they mean so much. We'll keep you updated if anything changes.

Prayers for Aidan needed.

Yesterday, Aidan started to not feel well. He has had an on and off illness, for lack of better terms, since late February. Seems on Thursdays Aidan develops abdominal pain, headache, exhaustion, extremities pain, etc. He has been seen and gone through all kinds of testing.

Yesterday's tests; 1 being a breath test for lactose intolerance came back negative but seemed to exasperate his symptoms, 2nd test was an Ultrasound which showed his spleen was enlarged. Labs came back last night with all liver enzymes really high (much much higher then past draws), his Bilirubin quadrupled and some other labs super elevated.

So now Aidan is admitted to CCF for the near future (hopefully just weekend). Lots more labs to be drawn, another ultrasound, MRCP (type of MRI), blood culture, a possible liver biopsy, and who knows what else.

Aidan is feeling better than yesterday so hopefully that remains and is in good spirits.

I have been on an emotional Rollercoaster today. A lot of old emotions are coming out and we happen to be in a room that we spent a lot time in when Aidan was younger. Aidan hasn't been admitted since beginning of 2020, he has had a good run.

I will be spending the night with Aidan and Jeff will hang with the other 2.

Please keep him in your prayers and hope that we can figure out what has been going on, and hopefully it is an easy fix. 🙏 💚🤪

For those that save their pop/beer/soup tabs for us (or would like to start), I will be collecting on Monday, April 17th or you can drop them off anytime, just place them in the bin to the right of garage door.

Aidan's Army will be delivering the pull tabs during Ronald McDonald's Pull Tab Palooza to benefit all the families that stay at RMH Cleveland. For those that don't know 🤷‍♀️ our oldest Aidan, when he was 1, fell critically ill over night. He had an emergency liver transplant, was hospitalized for 5 weeks initially and then spent the next 2 years off and on in CCF Children's. The 1st 5 weeks we lived at RMCH with the help of generous people (like those donating pop tabs🤗)
😊💚💙

Post 1 of 2
It has been a long time since I last posted. Which is a good thing because that means Aidan is well and is a healthy busy teenager and Sullivan and Declan are keeping me busy as well!

Today was Aidan's annual Transplant Clinic (though it's been several years since the last one) and ultrasound. And wow what a difference a couple years make, as Aidan hardly fits on the bed in the radiology department now. He was always so tiny and small...

Anyhow, Clinic was an all day thing - in clinic you see everyone and when I say everyone, I mean everyone; transplant and transplant coordinator, GI, a pharmacist, social worker, nutritionist, psychologist, a nurse and probably someone else I'm forgetting. But considering, it was a relaxing day. We didn't have to run around except in-between radiology and the clinic and that time we used for lunch and to get some homework done.

We met some new faces, missed a few (Aidan's GI Dr and Transplant surgeon were on service) and saw ones we've known since day 1. A couple times I felt like I was thrown right back to those 72-hours, like how it happens in the movies, it was weird. Aidan talked about a lot of stuff he remembers from when he was younger (shooting robots with nerf guns, walks and adventures we would have, people who visited, and so on.) It is nice to hear it from a now young man's memory vs a toddler-pre-teen. He didn't bring up any of the bad stuff like the pain and gazillion needle sticks he went through.

We were able to stop to see one of Aidan's original nurses Jenn, whom we have always kept in touch with, but missed Kamala (her and Jenn would argue about who's shift it was to get Aidan because he was just too cute, and funny, and sweet, lol.)

And as fate would have it, we met Karen (red head in pic), who at the time back in good ole 2007 was a nursing student (I believe, sorry if I got it wrong!) at Hillcrest hospital when Aidan was brought in to the ER. She is now a Physician Assistant on the Transplant Clinic. What are the odds!?!? And that she remembers Aidan!?, though I'm sure seeing a 1yo the way Aidan was, that's ingrained... she even asked about him some time after to see if he made it and how he was.

Aidan was given good news that if his next labs and his upcoming MRI look good, he may be able to get off 2 of the 3 meds he is on 😳❤ Just the thought of it, is exciting. Please say a little prayer for either of those to happen. It's a huge step!!! Everything else about Aidan is good as well.

I'll follow-up in the next day or so (post 2) to fill you all in on how he is doing personally .
For now it's off to bed.

Aidan's transplant and fundraiser story where he, Vince Menti, Music Instruction and Performance from Family Learning Center for Music, Van Stone, and John Flora played for transplant patients and their families was printed in the Twinsburg Bulletin (and apparently the Akron Beacon Journal 😮) today.

The fundraiser is in support of the Transplant House of Cleveland where patients testing, waiting for, or have received organs stay for weeks to months. Not only did the online fundraiser yield $62,000, $30,000 over their hopes, but watching families smile and have a slice of normalcy and fun was priceless.

Jeff and I spent a little over a month staying near the hospital; away from home and our dog. It's a hard thing to endure while going through the throws of illness. To experience even a few minutes of "normalcy" brings such a sense of being. I am happy to have shared in those moments for those families.

Happy Transplantversary Aidan!!

I can't believe it has been 13 years!! Thank you to my brother Jeff for sacrificing so much to give Aidan a sliver of your liver. That 13 hour surgery brought us these 13 years, which Aidan ROCKED! 🎸 Can't wait to see what his future holds.
