Progress In the big garden - three rows planted in the Brassicaceae family consisting of 65 cabbages, 10 broccoli, and 6 kale plants. I'm seeing sauerkraut and fermented veggies when I'm looking at these rows.

A friend was digging up his yellow iris bulbs - he didn't want them and offered them to me. They've been giving me beautiful flowers for the last 25 years. I have other plants that will be blooming soon in this flower bed - so pretty!!!

My wonderful neighbors dropped by to bring me a couple of gallon glass jars they had located. That makes me happy! I asked them to be in the video as I explained all the unusual things that I put in my lunchtime salad.

Gardening is so much fun and very satisfying growing your own vegetables. Asking for help to get up off the ground is humiliating. 87-year-olds know this. That's why we grow vertically as much as possible. Work smarter - not harder!!!

When I moved to the country, I got out the seed catalog and ordered all kinds of seeds. Most of the culinary and medicinal herbs were well behaved I learned to use and enjoy them. Comfrey on the other hand started out cute and appealing with its pretty blue flowers and promise of being an animal wormer and medicinal, but it out to be invasive and prolific. Good thing the sheep like it!

Progress on the big garden - 50 tomato plants in the ground! 50 plants may seem like a lot of tomatoes, but to make the tomato sauce which makes the pizza sauce, we buckets of tomatoes. Last step is to fertilize and add mulch to each plant. Progress!

I have plants I bring in the house when the weather drops below freezing and they live on a windowsill or go dormant. One of my garden pedestal boxes is dedicated to displaying these plants plus any plant "gifts" I receive. The greens revive, growth occurs, and it's a beautiful addition to my backyard.

I love a good tomato basil soup. Here's my recipe that will please either as a main dish or with a sandwich on the side. It's really the spices that you use that makes the difference. Try it - you'll like it!

I'm really enjoying these fermented veggies and here's a new twist. I have fresh radishes from the garden to ferment. Also, a friend said bay leaves have tannic acid which helps to keep fermented veggie crisp. Another plus! Let the fermenting begin!

I have several barnyard cats, but one of them thinks he owns my backyard. He waits patiently for his food to arrive every morning. A good vantage spot is laying on my veggies in the pedestal box. These plastic forks keep him of the plants until they get big enough to make a barrier for him and his cohorts. Gardening with animals is a continual balancing act!
