A vision shaped by more than two decades of surgical work across Africa is helping bring care closer to communities that have long gone without it.

Join us on October 3 at 9AM PT / 12PM ET for Surgical Deserts to Centers of Hope: A Conversation with Dr. William Rhodes!

Dr. Bill Rhodes will share how his experiences in regions with little or no access to modern surgical care inspired a vision to train highly skilled African surgeons, strengthen the hospitals where they serve, and expand access to quality, compassionate surgery.

Hear how that vision is taking shape and why investing in one surgeon can have an impact far beyond the operating room.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

A serious diagnosis can be even more frightening when specialized care is difficult to reach. This Gold September, we recognize the children and families facing pediatric cancer and the healthcare professionals working to expand access to timely diagnosis, treatment, and compassionate care across Africa and around the world.

At Mother of Mercy Referral & Teaching Hospital, there are days filled with long hours, limited resources, and patients whose needs can seem overwhelming. In those moments, faith is a source of strength, purpose, and perseverance.

Dr. Tom has often said that his role is simply to use the gifts he's been given to serve others and to care for each patient as best he can.

In the Nuba Mountains, medicine provides healing. Faith provides the strength to continue the work.

For Dr. Tom, the two have always gone hand in hand.

Eighteen months into his AMH-sponsored pediatric orthopedic fellowship, Dr. Yohannis Nigusu is gaining the specialized experience needed to help lead pediatric spine care in Ethiopia.

At CURE Ethiopia, he is participating in complex scoliosis surgeries, helping lead weekly spine clinics, developing skills with advanced 3D surgical navigation, and contributing to research and treatment standards. Since his fellowship began in January 2025, the hospital’s collaborative spine campaigns have provided 137 surgeries and 116 non-invasive casting procedures for children.

For one 12-year-old girl, that expertise meant treatment for a severe spinal curve that could eventually have threatened her breathing, heart, and future. Dr. Yohannis joined the surgical team that successfully stabilized her spine. Two weeks later, she was recovering well, while her mother expressed the relief of finally seeing her daughter receive the care she had sought for years.

Dr. Yohannis is now preparing for the next phase of his fellowship. Each new skill brings Ethiopia closer to a future where more children can receive highly specialized spine care in their own country.

It took Jacob "Alucha" 48 days to reach Kijabe College of Health Sciences from the Nuba Mountains.

He left his family and colleagues at Mother of Mercy Referral Teaching Hospital (MMRTH), crossed difficult terrain and multiple borders, and endured weeks of delays to pursue advanced anesthesia training.

Now, through support from African Mission Healthcare and Mother of Mercy, Alucha has begun a two-year program to become a Kenya Registered Nurse Anesthetist. He will return to MMRTH as the hospital’s second nurse anesthetist, helping expand lifesaving surgical and emergency care for mothers, children, and trauma patients.

In the video, Alucha shares how this training is preparing him to return to MMRTH and strengthen anesthesia care in the Nuba Mountains.

A safe birth should not depend on how far a mother lives from care.

When complications begin, every mile matters.

Across Sudan’s Nuba Mountains, Mother of Mercy’s community clinics are bringing essential care closer to mothers and families.

In this brief field update, Dr. Tom Catena and Dr. Ingrid Kelters explain what these clinics make possible and why strengthening them matters during pregnancy, childbirth, and the days after birth.

At the 2026 KRNA Conference in Mombasa, AMH-supported anesthesia trainees gathered to learn, connect, and strengthen the care they will carry back to their hospitals.

Their training will help expand safer surgical and emergency care across the communities they serve.
