Montana Family Pharmacies (MFP) is a group of independent pharmacies focusing on what is best for Montana Patients and Montana Pharmacies. We, as independent pharmacies, work hard to take better care of our patients than the chains. We take the time to get to know our patients and be the most accessible healthcare provider in the community.

Lately, we’ve been hearing the same themes come up repeatedly from independent pharmacies.

Margins are harder to predict, contracts feel more complex, and there’s far less room for error in day-to-day decisions.

It’s not just a handful of pharmacies. It’s happening across the U.S. Reimbursement pressure. Staffing shortages. Inventory issues. Operational burnout. Most pharmacy owners are carrying some version of this right now, and that’s exactly why conversations like this matter.

What’s been the biggest operational pressure in your pharmacy lately? Drop it in the comments.

We’ll share how Montana Family Pharmacies helps independent pharmacies navigate these challenges and what resources may help support your team.

A lot of pharmacies think about DEA inspections as something you prepare for when inspectors show up. But in reality, inspections usually evaluate the systems and habits your pharmacy follows every single day.

It’s not just: “Are we ready for an inspection today?”

It’s: “Is our pharmacy operating in a way that stays ready all the time?”

This month, we’re sharing part of MFP’s Regulatory & Compliance Quarterly Deep Dive, a member resource available to Plus and VIP members. One of the biggest themes is that strong compliance readiness usually comes down to four key areas:

• People — staff who know their roles and can respond confidently
• Processes — policies that are actually followed and reviewed regularly
• Records — organized, accurate, accessible documentation
• Practice — self-audits, mock inspections, and ongoing improvement

When one of these areas slips, risk increases. When all four work together, pharmacies feel far more prepared long before an inspection happens.

At Montana Family Pharmacies, we believe compliance shouldn’t feel like a last-minute scramble. It should be part of everyday operations.

MFP Plus and VIP members have access to compliance tools, mock audits, templates, DEA resources, and additional readiness support through the MFP Member Portal and our live support team of regulatory and compliance experts.

Preparation isn’t about predicting inspections. It’s about building a pharmacy that stays ready.

Before Q2 wraps up, it’s worth asking a tougher question: Do you really have a clear picture of how your pharmacy is performing?

Not just day-to-day, but in the areas that quietly shape your business—contract performance, purchasing decisions, compliance consistency, and what you’re walking into in Q3. These issues rarely show up overnight, but build slowly, until they’re harder (and more expensive) to fix.

Almost every independent pharmacy is facing some version of this. The difference is how early you catch it. What’s one area you haven’t had time to review yet, but know you probably should?

Picture this: you're attending to your staff's daily requests, managing clients, and running your pharmacy when a DEA inspector arrives for a review. Is this something you're already prepared for— in terms of consistent document organization, maintenance, and upkeep of your protocols?

What starts as a routine review can take a serious turn, depending on the excellence of your staff and the explanation of records. Managing compliance while balancing staffing, operations, patient care, and even inventory should always be handled cohesively.

This is not a call for perfection, but for reducing risks before both the client and the DEA inspector walk into your pharmacy.

Believe it or not, major events like the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup can sometimes impact pharmacy operations in surrounding regions.

Big international events often affect transportation, staffing, ordering timelines, and product demand, especially near host cities and nearby distribution centers. So for independent pharmacies, this is a good reminder to think ahead before things get busy.

Now may be a good time to:
• Review fast-moving inventory
• Prepare for increased travel medication demand
• Look ahead at cycle fills and sync programs
• Communicate early with patients
• Avoid last-minute ordering issues

It’s also important to stay cautious with controlled substance ordering and make sure your team is current on any state guidance related to out-of-country prescriptions. The pharmacies that stay strongest long-term are usually the ones preparing early, not reacting late.
