Did you know that browsers like Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome have built-in text to speech readers?
These browsers use voices powered by AI, which provide a more human-sounding reader. You can use it to read web pages, documents, and more. In Microsoft Edge, you can activate the reader by clicking the reader mode or by pressing f9, then clicking "read aloud." You can also hit control+shift+u to start and stop reading. Screen reader users can find voice options by using the up and down arrows, where you can change the voice and reading speed.
In Google Chrome, go to the chrome menu by pressing the alt key, then up arrow to more tools. Press the right arrow key, then down arrow to reader. From there, you can hit play to start listening to the page, and navigate to the settings menu to adjust the voice speed and switch to a different voice. You can also access these features with the mouse.
The AI reader requires an internet connection. Chrome and Edge will default to standard text to speech voices when offline. AI voices require more energy usage than basic text to speech voices. This will not affect your device but requires more energy from Microsoft and Google, since AI models require higher processing power that cannot be efficiently managed on your device.
