You’ve gone through the lengthy evaluation process to figure out which augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device is the best fit. You got the device purchased/funded. It is now sitting in front of you and suddenly the optimism blends with confusion, leaving you feeling frazzled and uncertain about what to do next.

I get it, really! I also used to feel that way, but after working on, and with, teams to navigate the complexities of technology within real life, I came up with a way to tackle it in a practical way. My approach makes language modeling manageable within real, everyday life. It guides communication device use to be genuine and meaningful.

I have refined the concept over my 13 years as an SLP, and I’m proud to say that it has helped hundreds of other SLPs and families realize that hey, using AAC at home can be natural and seamless. It is NOT scary, it is NOT overwhelming, and it is NOT just one more thing to check off on a never ending to-do list.

It would mean the world to me if my approach could help you, too. Grab my AAC Modeling Map and follow along for deeper AAC learning opportunities. Click the link in my bio to download the doc while it’s FREE and share it with at least 1 person who needs a nudge forward, too!

Bottom line: AAC modeling can become easier using my free resource, link in bio!

We know that assistive technology is important every single day, but today it gets extra love and attention! Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is one type of assistive technology (AT). It provides people who have communication differences with opportunities to connect, interact, and engage with our world. So many types of AAC tools exist, it can be mind-boggling! Let me break it down for you:

🔵Lite/low-tech = paper-based, no voice output, person points to symbol/word and communication partner views message, helpful for modeling language and for short exchanges; Pro Tip- laminate them for use during water based activities

🔵Mid-tech = battery-operated (think AA or AAA!), pre-record messages, push button for voice output, helpful for engaging quickly and for gaining someone’s attention; Pro Tip- always record messages using an age and gender appropriate voice

🔵High-tech = apps and software presented on a tablet or computer, plug in for battery recharge, say any message imaginable using synthesized speech (think Siri voice!); Pro Tip- it can take lots of time and practice to learn the device but the benefits are beyond worth it!

Talk to me about the AAC evaluation process to figure out which device(s) are best for you, your loved one, or your client. I’m here to help make communication accessible for all!

As a mom of little boys and an SLP who intuitively designs creative play, I’ve learned to embrace messes! (Trust me though, I used to run away from them…)

Encouraging kids (and adult communication partners…) to let go and have fun with sensory experiences typically creates the most meaningful, and dare I say magical, communication opportunities. But how do you keep the expensive AAC devices safe and clean? Grab a clear shower cap, place it on top of the screen, and voila you have a cheap and easy solution that doesn’t interfere with touch screen capabilities. Pretty cool, right? 🤩 What other hacks do you use to protect your tech? Comment below!

But I CAN acknowledge the hard stuff and tell you it’s going to be okay! And yeah, I’m a chocolate lover who may even share some with you 😉

Yes AAC can be complex, yes there is alwas new technology to keep up with (anybody else eyeballing all the new AI features in devices?!), yes including AAC in busy lives can feel overwhelming…but I promise it doesn’t have to leave you frazzled!

I have insight and tips that can make that stressful feeling melt away for parents, SLPs, and anybody else jumping into the AAC world.

Comment below or send me a DM with your questions so I can help you realize it’s all going to be ok! 🫶

My AAC evaluations almost always end in a recommendation for an AAC “system,” meaning the client uses different tools to communicate depending on the situation.

Talking about bath time routines and playing with water toys in the tub? Use a laminated, lite-tech paper board with symbols and text for “splash” and “go!”

Need quick participation in a smoothie making group activity? Let’s press a mid-tech button to exclaim when it’s time to “pour it!”

Time to chat at bedtime about a favorite book? Let’s create spontaneous phrases on a high-tech device!

I know I communicate with different tools like verbal speech, email, text messages, FaceTime, etc., so shouldn’t everyone have access to a variety of tools, too? 🤔

Using AAC devices everywhere shouldn’t be overwhelming and clunky, but it often can feel that way. Based on 13 years of experience guiding families and support teams, I developed a framework for effectively bringing augmentative and alternative communication into everyday settings.

I’ll be holding your hand to use this framework fully in an upcoming event (stay tuned! 🎉), but effective AAC implementation shouldn’t wait on me!
