When I am counseling patients I do not teach a vegan diet. I utilize evidence based science and nutritional guidelines (see recent guidelines from American College of Cardiology). The science, and my vast experience, leads me to recommend a plant predominant diet high in fiber and phytonutrients and low in saturated fat. Meat is not forbidden, just minimized.
The results speak for themselves. Some of my patients go completely plant based and do amazing but it is not a requirement to lose weight and achieve health.
Personally, I choose to eat a vegan diet because I do not need to kill an animal to have excellent health. I do not want to give one penny toward the barbaric animal agriculture industry. Yes, there is no way to completely avoid losing animals to raise food but it is quite obvious that a plant based diet minimizes the suffering.
You don’t see animal agriculture. It is hidden from you because if you did see it, you wouldn’t want it.
I choose foods that are good for my health (most of the time), good for the environment, and minimize the senseless torture and destruction of billions of animals. I do not take that ethic into the clinic room with a patient. We simply discuss evidenced based nutrition.
