Latinas wait the longest to get help for pelvic floor symptoms. That’s not because we suffer more. It’s because we carry more.

We put family first. We keep leaking, pressure, and pain a secret, sometimes even from our own mothers and sisters.

Research shows Latinas face the highest barriers to getting care, and that shame often gets passed down from one generation to the next.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, let’s honor our mamás and abuelas by doing what many of them never got to do: ask for help.

Leaking is common. Pressure is common. Pain with intimacy is common. None of it is something you just have to live with, whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or in menopause.

Have you had a pelvic health checkup this year?

We make time for our annual physicals, dental cleanings, and eye exams — but what about our pelvic health?

A pelvic health checkup can be an opportunity to talk about symptoms, understand what’s normal for your body, and address concerns before they start affecting your everyday life.

Here are a few steps to get started:
Talk about your symptoms & goals — even the things that may seem small.
Learn what’s normal for your body — understanding your pelvic health can help you recognize changes.

Pelvic floor physical therapy is individualized care that helps address your specific needs and goals while improving your overall health. Things like constipation and chronic back pain can be addressed with pelvic PT.

Your pelvic health deserves attention, too.

Ready to take the first step?

Be honest — when’s the last time you actually sat all the way down on a public toilet? Share in the comments

If your go-to move is hover + hurry + push, you’re not weird, you’re just doing what an entire generation of “just get it over with” bathroom culture trained you to do. But your bladder and pelvic floor never got that memo about efficiency.

Here’s what’s actually happening: when you hover, your pelvic floor stays braced instead of relaxed. When you strain or push, you’re overriding the reflex that lets your bladder empty on its own. Do that enough times and you can end up with incomplete emptying (hello, UTIs), a pelvic floor that forgets how to fully let go, or urgency that shows up at the worst moments.

The fix isn’t complicated: sit fully when even in public restrooms, take one breath to let your pelvic floor soften, then let gravity and your bladder do the rest — no pushing required which isn’t great for your postpartum pelvic floor. If it feels impossible to relax down there even when you try, that’s worth a conversation with a pelvic floor PT, not something to just live with.

📚 Educational Monday | Myth vs. Fact 🤎

MYTH: You can’t start pelvic floor exercises right after delivery.

FACT: Gentle pelvic floor exercises, such as Kegels, can often be part of early postpartum recovery. They help support healing, rebuild strength, and improve pelvic floor function as your body recovers. 🌿

Every postpartum journey is different, and your pelvic health deserves personalized care and guidance.

✨ Your recovery and your pelvic health will affect your overall health as you age. Take care of your future self
