Billi's BEliever's - From Tumor to Triumph

Yesterday indeed was a special day but the icing on the cake was the moment I met these 2 beautiful ladies.

I’m a people person to my core. In my eyes, you’re not a stranger until you do something strange 🙂😉. While waiting for my to-go order at Chik Fil A, I made eye contact 👀 with another patron who was sitting down & she smiled at me. 😊

I walked over to her & her guest, introduced myself and gave her one of my Walk flyers. I shared that this was not a solicitation in any way but a person that smiles at “strangers” like I do, lets me know that we have kindred spirits, so I just wanted her to have this information in the she or someone else ever needs it.

Her response wasn’t a generic “Thank You” or a sympathetic “I’m sorry that happened to you.” It was “My father died from brain cancer back in 1988”… and boom 💥 that’s when I got confirmation of WHO ☝🏾 and WHAT was behind that smile… 🥹

As many times as this moment has happened, it still blows my mind every time. But for God to send this reminder 12yrs to the date my whole journey as a brain tumor survivor began, was a gift I did not expect to receive. 🥲

Me, Mrs. Sharon, Mr. Ellis 🕊️ and Mrs. Sandy are framily now! We talked at length and found out we have mutual connections and more. 🙌🏾

Never a stranger, just wasn’t our time to meet until now… 🥰

Today I graciously celebrate 1️⃣2️⃣yrs as a . The last sentence of this Proclamation sums up what this day is truly all about.

I BElieved with my whole heart from the moment I received my diagnosis that this was not going to be end of my story. I didn’t know the HOW but I knew the WHAT and that was I am going to share my testimony and do whatever I can to help someone else… and did.

I truly cannot say enough GRAYt things about Liz…

Before I met her or any of my brain tumor community friends, one of the first things I ever said was “This is hard for me, but I can’t even imagine having to care for one of my children, my husband, my parents or any of my loved ones if they had to go through this.”

Even before my own diagnosis, I witnessed the indomitable strength of my dear friend Mardi as she cared for her toddler son through his Medulloblastoma diagnosis. Then came Liz and her beloved Julio, who if you closed your eyes, you would never know he was in a constant fight for his life because he had thee most positive & loving spirit. 🍍💛

I honestly could go on and on, but that’s only because I’ve met so many people by TALKING & SHARING our stories. There’s absolutely no way any of us could navigate this journey without connecting and being each other’s guide ➡️, arm 💪🏾 shoulder 👥, ear👂🏽 heart 🩶 or whatever we needed at the time.

This is your nudge to move beyond fear, shame, pride or whatever might be holding you back and enter into a safe space of help and healing! 🩶

My church is currently engaged in a corporate wide Bible study entitled “BELIEVE” by Randy Frazee. Each week we focus on a different aspect of our spiritual journeys. 📖 I always learn something new but this evening, I could’ve taught the lesson myself because the topic was one I know ALL about… and that’s the power of ! 💥👥

Since childhood, I’ve been blessed to be a part of some wonderful communities from school age to college friends, youth groups, social & professional organizations and more. Learning that I had a brain tumor left me with a feeling of isolation I’d never experienced before 😟😢… then almost overnight, everything changed!

It started with ☝🏾 person, ☝🏾 conversation , ☝🏾 prayer and ☝🏾 promise. Unbeknownst to me, God had been preparing me the whole time to know what true community was because he knew I’d need to build my own one day 😭🙏🏾

The same way people feel about their favorite NFL 🏈 or NBA 🏀 team is how I feel about MY team of BElievers! 🌟🌟 There’s no way I could’ve gotten this far without them! The commitment, sacrifice and love they’ve shown me & each other over the course of 12 years is remarkable! And the hope, love and support I receive from my fellow members is priceless!

When I say it’s more than a walk, this is what I mean.. 🏃🏽‍♀️🧠🩶 Come be a part of something GRAYt!

As a natural & professional speaker, I absolutely stand behind the fact that things such as tone, delivery, context, etc affect communication.

But as a and advocate, I can also attest that NONE of those things matter when it comes to you sharing your story! It’s not about perfection, it’s about purpose!!
EVERY story matters and someone’s breakthrough is on the other side of YOURS!

My Big Sis and fellow survivor Leslie shared her story with me privately 11yrs ago after receiving my diagnosis and changed my life. And on this day, she shared it publicly at a community event for the first time and changed someone else’s life.

On this last day of May, I encourage anyone impacted by brain tumors in ANY way to ! It’s not too soon and it’s never too late!
