Seedless grapes. Seedless watermelons. Seedless oranges. Seedless tomatoes. The market consistently promotes seedless fruit varieties as an advancement. In reality, sterile produce represents a biological dead end. Historically, gathering and storing seeds from a crop was essential for human survival. This free, independent practice allowed people to grow food season after season without needing external approval. Today, however, this traditional agricultural loop is being subtly disrupted.
Companies like Bayer (formerly Monsanto), Syngenta, and Corteva now control over 60% of the global seed market. Many of their patented seeds are engineered so plants cannot produce viable seeds for replanting or they produce food that is completely seedless. Farmers must repurchase every single season. This means the ability to feed your family is shifting from a basic human right to a subscription plan. Control the seed, control the world. When crops cannot reproduce, corporations dictate who eats, at what cost, and what grows. That’s not innovation—that’s a monopoly on human survival. What makes it worse is that heirloom and open-pollinated varieties are disappearing fast. The U.N. estimates we have already lost 75% of our crop diversity since the 1900s. Every lost variety is a door closing on your food independence.
The way to push back is simple: collect seeds that are able to reproduce. Open-pollinated heirloom varieties from companies like Baker Creek, Seeds Savers Exchange, and True Leaf Market still produce seeds you can replant year after year completely free. Even a small balcony garden produces hundreds of seeds each season. Properly preserved, these seeds last three to five years, allowing a single harvest to secure your food supply for half a decade.
There is no need to fear, but there is a desperate need to reclaim and preserve knowledge before it is lost forever. Check out the comments section for step-by-step instructions on how to save seeds and how to ensure your seeds are viable (screenshot for later)!
