“Tim & George” in their debut performance at Westview Health Care Center! The pair of entertainers are frequent musical guests across the street at Country Living at Westview Commons, and we knew their energetic set list of radio classics would play just as well with the Westview audience.

The songs were sequenced to build the energy in the room at key moments, and the performers maintained a keen awareness of their audience throughout the set. This concert’s gathered guests grew to include several family members and Westview staff as they made their rounds. As seen, everyone danced the afternoon away.

Throughout the show, listening patients, residents, and guests clapped to the beat, waved their hands in the air, and smiled from ear to ear. Many thanks to Tim & George for sharing their talents with our audience here at Westview!

Westview patients and residents played around and played a round (or two) of “Happy Hippos” to their delight. This adaptive game is easy to make and easy to enjoy; featuring frantic tabletop fun for players of all ages and abilities.

We fabricated the players’ fun-catching-food-grabbers with some *carefully* cut pool noodles, plastic cups, and packing tape. Patients and residents gathered around a large spread of tables staged together with individual buckets at the sides for the quick capture of their bounty. The objects of pursuit here—several packs of soft plastic ball-pit balls—further affirming the total safety of this rousing recreational rally.

Therapeutic Recreation Assistant Janet served as the curator of the contest as well as the instigator of its fun; collecting each rounds’ tally of multicolored spheres and reigniting the frenzy with each fresh drop.

This was an especially vivacious event for both participants and onlookers! What’s the next board game you think we should bring to life here at Westview?!?!

Illenys Martinez-Cruz earned applause and appreciation as Westview’s March Employee of the Month. Illenys is a Teacher at Westview Child Care Center in the 2-Year-Olds classroom, where she has gained many fans among her colleagues, students, and their families. In teaching this age group, Illenys’ efforts are as intentional as they are improvisational. She aims to maximize engagement and enhance her students’ education through a wide range of early teachable moments.

In her classroom, Illenys loves to see her students grow and gain confidence in a comfortable learning space. Preschool teaching is a familiar field for her, with four years of prior experience in public preschool settings before becoming a member of the original staff at Westview Child Care Center in 2023. Illenys engages directly with her students and seeks meaningful moments to develop their communication skills through play. To relate to weekly classroom themes, she introduces elements with a “Mystery Box” and engages students to use clues to discover its contents. She also sparks curiosity by reading stories with the lights dimmed while flashlights illuminate the action. Their interactions may be verbal, paraverbal, or still developing—but their trust in Illenys brightens every opportunity for learning.

Teaching new words to her students is a noteworthy joy for Illenys. She delights in the excitement on their faces when they understand a new phrase, expression, or concept. She integrates elements of Spanish language and culture into her teaching and often utilizes music as a gleeful learning tool. The familiar tune of “The More We Get Together” is frequently sung in both English and Spanish in the 2-Year-Olds classroom; merrily exhibiting the students’ appreciation of the song’s theme. Illenys believes that music resonates deeply, imprinting lessons on both the heart and the mind.

Sign language concepts are often introduced in Illenys’ classroom, offering students another stimulating method of essential communication. Whether in English, Spanish, or Sign Language, Illenys and her colleagues ensure that some of the most important words her students learn are “please,” “thank you,” and “friend!” With gratitude and pride, she acknowledges the team of Teachers and Teacher Assistants she works alongside and cites their collective bond as a key strength at Westview Child Care Center.

Illenys’ advocacy for lifelong learning reflects her own personal growth and passionate pursuits. She enjoys developing new skills, including “Wood Therapy,” for which she has earned national certification and continues to practice with friends and family. Bible study has become another meaningful commitment through her experiences. Above all, Illenys values time spent with her “little family”—her husband, Alejandro Cardona, and her daughter, Angelica. Her devotion to her family is deeply rooted in lived experience. Illenys and her family relocated from Puerto Rico to the United States in pursuit of greater access to care and educational opportunities for her daughter. Through that journey, she developed a strong understanding of the challenges families may face when navigating support systems and advocating for their children’s needs.

Perspective continues to shape how Illenys approaches her role as an educator—guiding her patience, strengthening her compassion, and reinforcing her commitment to helping every child reach their full potential. Illenys emphasized her passion for teaching as she received this award: “I love what I do and I am grateful to be recognized for my work. I truly enjoy helping toddlers learn through play, music, and lots of fun activities. Seeing how excited they get when they learn new things and try new words is truly rewarding!”

Katy Holzer, Director of Westview Child Care Center, affirms what Illenys means to Westview Child Care Center and her students: “Ms. Illenys brings a rare combination of warmth, attentiveness, and creativity to her classroom. At Westview, we believe in building rich, engaging learning environments, and she embodies that in every lesson she plans. Her expertise is evident in the excitement and confidence of her students, and we are so fortunate to have her on the team.”

Hayleah Castleberry merited recognition as Westview’s Employee of the Month for February 2026. As a Certified Nursing Assistant at Westview Health Care Center, Hayleah forms essential connections with patients and residents across their continuum of care. Through both clinical attentiveness and compassionate presence, she ensures that each individual receives not only the support they need, but the dignity they deserve. While the responsibilities are considerable—requiring both physical effort and emotional awareness—Hayleah approaches each day with a steady commitment to her patients and her team.

Teamwork is central to Hayleah’s approach. She values the cohesion of her nursing unit; noting that communication is the foundation of their success. The ability to convey essential information quickly and effectively allows the team to remain focused where it matters most—on patient care. This shared understanding creates an environment where collaboration is seamless and support is constant.

Hayleah grew up in Moosup and attended Norwich Technical High School. Hayleah earned her CNA certification directly through an accelerated program at Norwich Tech. She entered the healthcare workforce upon graduation; building a strong foundation of experience over her five years at Westview thus far. Hayleah has gained valuable knowledge while becoming a consistent and dependable presence within the nursing team.

Meaningful moments of care are often on display at Westview, and one such interaction recently reflected Hayleah’s humility and unassuming dedication. At the end of a full day’s activities in assisting a resident, she was met with a simple but heartfelt expression of gratitude as the resident expressed her appreciation for Hayleah and the nursing team, telling her “Thank you for today—you did great!” For Hayleah, kindred interactions like these serve to remind her that the work she performs each day carries profound significance. While providing care is routine for staff, it represents something far greater to the people they assist.

Outside of work, Hayleah enjoys spending time with family and embracing the natural beauty of New England. She resides in Putnam, CT with her boyfriend, William, and remains closely connected to her family across the Windham County region. Whether visiting New England beaches (Rocky Neck State Park in Niantic, CT is a favorite), exploring regional hiking trails, or competing in spirited family game nights, Hayleah values quality time spent with those closest to her. Monopoly competitions, in particular, are known to frequently spark lively rivalries whenever the board is set.

Reflecting on her recognition, Hayleah expressed gratitude and a strong sense of team unity. “I am grateful to be selected as Employee of the Month—it was definitely a surprise! While this represents an individual acknowledgment, I know our responsibilities are a team effort. Teamwork and communication are huge factors in accomplishing our goals. We all work together to keep our residents and patients at the center of our efforts.” Hayleah continued to illustrate the sense of unity she feels among patients, residents, colleagues, families, and visitors alike: “We build connections with each individual and appreciate how we get to know their families through the process. There is a strong bond throughout Westview—and I am so thankful for this recognition!”

Westview Administrator David T. Panteleakos commended Hayleah’s consistency and compassionate approach to care. “Hayleah’s commitment to her patients’ care, her reliability as a teammate, and her ability to foster meaningful connections make her an invaluable member of our nursing team. Congratulations to Hayleah!”

🐰🐐🐣🐢🐿️ Happy Easter from Westview!

We loved the visit from Carly’s Critters LLC this week; bringing lots of fuzzy, furry, and friendly pals to frolic among us. Carly and her friends bring their mobile animal presence throughout New England to spread joy, interaction, and education about creatures great and small. We gathered patients and residents in our Formal Dining Room to host their happy herd.

Joining among patients, residents, staff, and visitors, this cheerful, cuddly company was complimented with Nursing students from Eastern Connecticut State University. This group of ECSU students are presently pursuing their clinical education requirements at Westview, and we delight in sharing moments like this to enhance definitions of care.

Thank you to everyone who lent a hand, hoof, wing, paw, and smile! Sending Easter blessings from our family to yours!
