💙 BITTERSWEET NEWS…
…that Doug Brewer, an early and passionate advocate for the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences, will soon be retiring as CEO of Whitfield Regional Hospital, which he established as our healthcare partner.

Doug’s efforts to support Demopolis as the location for ASHS and to make rural medicine a critical part of our mission were influential and helped bring us to where we are today — holding our first student orientation this week, with our state-of-the-art residential campus rising on 10 acres next to Whitfield, and with classes about to begin in mere weeks.

Doug is a member of the statewide board of trustees governing ASHS, and we look forward to his continued involvement, even as he enjoys his well-deserved retirement.

💙 WHAT A DAY. WHAT A BEGINNING. ⚕️

After months of applications, interviews, decisions and anticipation, it was an absolute joy to finally bring together the founding students of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences — along with their parents, teachers, staff and the many community partners who are helping make this historic dream a reality.

For the first time, our students were able to truly experience what it means to be an ASHS student. They posed for ID photos, were fitted for uniforms, got a glimpse of what their rooms and campus life will be like, received their summer reading assignments, and learned more about academics, residential life, community service and the close-knit dorm communities that will become their home away from home.

Just as importantly, everyone felt the warmth and excitement of Demopolis, which is embracing these young pioneers and their mission to help transform the future of healthcare in Alabama.

There was laughter. There were hugs. There were proud parents, excited students and more than a few emotional moments.

Most of all, there was a shared feeling that something truly special is beginning.

❤️ A HISTORIC AND EMOTIONAL MOMENT ❤️

Meet the groundbreaking students of the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences, gathering as a group for the first time.

Brought together today in Demopolis for the school’s inaugural orientation, these rising 9th and 10th graders represent communities from across Alabama — and together they are changing Alabama’s healthcare trajectory.

As the founding class of ASHS, they have committed themselves to a , pursuing rigorous academics, hands-on learning and focused pathways that will prepare them to become the next generation of this state’s healthcare professionals and leaders.

We are deeply honored to welcome these students and the families who believe in them, in us, and are sharing this remarkable journey.

🎯 It’s Orientation Day at the ASHS in Demopolis, with loads of information being shared, student ID photos and uniform fittings happening, summer reading being distributed, and a chance to get acquainted with the area where Alabama’s future healthcare leaders will be learning, training, living and having fun for the next four years.

🚜 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
—-> For the first time, we’re stepping inside the future home of ASHS students!

While construction progress on the Alabama School of Healthcare Sciences’ 10-acre Demopolis campus has mostly been viewed from the outside, these new images offer a glimpse into the spaces where students will spend four years learning, growing and building lifelong friendships.

From the fifth-floor view overlooking neighboring Whitfield Regional Hospital to the residential hallways and future student gathering spaces now taking shape, the campus is beginning to reveal what life at ASHS will feel like.

More than a residence hall, this building will be a home away from home — a place where students will discover independence, forge enduring relationships, and create memories that extend far beyond the classroom.

Designed by Caldwell Architects and being built by Brasfield & Gorrie, the permanent campus remains on schedule for a summer 2027 move-in.

📚 The historic first chapter of ASHS begins even sooner, though, with students arriving in August 2026 at the school’s standalone mini-campus at the The University of West Alabama in nearby Livingston.
