This morning, The Owen Foundation had the incredible honor of surprising Haylee Griggs, Structured Learning Classroom Teacher at B. McDaniel Intermediate School in Denison ISD, as our 2026 Special Education Teacher of the Year. 💙
Mrs. Griggs was nominated by a parent who shared story after story of the love, creativity, and dedication she pours into her students every single day. Her classroom is about so much more than academics. Guided by her motto, “See the ABLE, not the LABEL,” she teaches life skills, confidence, independence, and belonging.
From helping students learn budgeting and grocery shopping in the community, to cooking full Thanksgiving meals from scratch, to creating opportunities for students to participate in livestock shows, basketball, and track events- Mrs. Griggs goes above and beyond to ensure her students experience the same opportunities as everyone else. She celebrates growth, builds confidence, and reminds every child that they are capable.
This afternoon, we surprised her with a $500 gift presented directly to her, not for classroom supplies, but for herself- as a way to say thank you and help kick off her summer break with something she truly deserves.
Teachers like Mrs. Griggs change lives far beyond the walls of their classrooms, and today we were honored to celebrate one of the very best. Congratulations, Mrs. Griggs! 🍎✨
*It was incredibly difficult to choose from all of the amazing local teachers who were nominated this year. Please know that every single one of you is deeply appreciated for the love, patience, and impact you pour into your students each day. 💙
