So…what the heck is Buccal Massage?

“Buccal” simply means cheek.

This focused treatment works inside and outside the mouth to release jaw and facial tension, support lymphatic drainage, and encourage deep relaxation.

It can be a gentler option when the area feels sensitive or guarded—and many people also notice their face looks and feels more relaxed and refreshed afterward. [before (left) and after (right)]

New! Buccal Face & Jaw Release Treatment

I’ve added Buccal Massage to my jaw-work toolbox—and no, “buccal” is not nearly as mysterious as it sounds. It simply means cheek.

This focused treatment works inside and outside the mouth through the jaw, lower face, and neck to help:
• release jaw and facial tension
• support lymphatic drainage
• ease fascial restriction
• encourage deep relaxation
• leave the face looking and feeling refreshed

It’s a gentler approach that can be especially useful when the area is sensitive or guarded—and it supports a calmer nervous system.

Introductory pricing through October 15

Established clients: $99 / 60 minutes
New clients: $139 / 75 minutes, including initial consultation + treatment

Your jaw has cheeks. Apparently, they wanted attention too.

You found the masseter. Now meet one of its harder-to-reach neighbors.

This technique explores a sensitive area farther back inside the cheek, behind the masseter and near several deeper jaw structures.

A quick anatomy reality check: You may or may not be contacting the lateral pterygoid itself—there is a lot happening in a very small neighborhood. You can still gently explore whether the area feels tense or sensitive.

Use freshly washed hands or a clean disposable glove, keep your fingernails short and smooth, and use very light pressure. Being able to reach a spot is not an invitation to attack it.

Avoid this technique over sores, irritated tissue, active infection, or dental work that has not fully healed.

Sometimes the outside of the jaw is only part of the conversation - terrible pun intended.

The masseter can be approached from both sides of the cheek.

This intraoral technique gives you a different angle for exploring jaw tension—especially when external massage feels helpful but incomplete.

The goal is not to find the most painful spot and attack it. Use freshly washed or gloved hands, move gradually, and let sensitivity guide how much pressure you use.

Avoid intraoral work over sores, irritated tissue, active infection, or dental work that has not fully healed.

Multiple clients have shown the same surprising pattern on their Oura Rings during treatment.

Despite receiving focused, (often intense) intraoral work, their rings recorded Recovery Status during the session.

Why?

Because the goal isn't to overpower your muscles.

It's to earn your nervous system's trust.

When your body feels safe, it often lets go of the tension it's been holding onto.

Say "Aaaah". This is Masseter Move 2—a progression from basic self-massage.

Instead of working on the muscle while your jaw stays still, you’ll combine gentle pressure with slow opening and closing. This can help you notice whether the two sides feel or move differently.

Use both hands, keep the motion comfortable, and watch that your jaw does not drift farther to one side as you open.

This is an exploration—not a test you need to pass.

I love when my clients 'see for themselves'. 😄

My client stopped their nightly jaw stretch for one night—and woke up tight again.

Skepticism: gone.
Stretching: resumed.

Does your jaw ever feel like it has been working a double shift?

The masseter is one of the main muscles involved in chewing and clenching. This gentle self-massage may help calm some of that tension—but more pressure is not necessarily better.

Move slowly, stay within a comfortable range, and let the tissue respond rather than trying to overpower it.

Your jaw is part of a bigger story. This is one useful tool, not the whole answer.
