STOP T1D

STOP T1D At STOP T1D, we know that early type 1 diabetes detection through screening leads to better outcomes. Please see our website STOPT1DProgram.org for more info.

Our program is led by the Barbara Davis Center for Diabetes at the University of Colorado.

New in : A Dutch study found that young people managing feel burdened by treatments and their day-to-day health management responsibilities. Here are some key takeaways from their research report:

"Young adults with type 1 diabetes experience substantial treatment burden, particularly for daily care tasks, and report moderate health-related quality of life, with emotional well-being and daily functioning most affected."

"Higher treatment burden and lower HRQoL may be associated with female gender, lower time in range and dissatisfaction with diabetes management approach."

"Tailoring care plans and supporting shared decision making may help reduce treatment burden and better align diabetes management with young adults' daily lives and personal priorities."

New in : Danish study concludes that "both type 1 diabetes (T1D) and type 2 diabetes (T2D)... were associated with a higher incidence of subtrochanteric or femoral shaft (ST or FS) and hip fractures."

"Overall, ST or FS fractures were reported in 1.9% of patients with T1D and 11.9% of those with T2D, whereas hip fractures were reported in 1.7% and 11.4% of patients with T1D and T2D, respectively"

Both T1D and T2D are linked to a higher incidence of subtrochanteric or femoral shaft and hip fractures, but after adjusting for age, only the association for T1D remains significant.

New out of Japan: Family members of people who screened positive or are currently managing should also be screened for the autoantibodies. The more you know, the better informed and prepared you can be!

Autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) is characterized by an immune-mediated loss of β-cell function due to the activation of an autoimmune pathological process over time, and islet autoantibodies (IAbs) are known as key markers for the diagnosis of T1D [1].

We are certainly in favor of routine, early screenings beginning for pediatric patients as young as age 1, and beyond!

"Findings from this pilot offer critical insights into the practical implementation of presymptomatic type 1 diabetes screening and monitoring programs in diverse clinical environments. Despite identified barriers, continuous quality improvement efforts, along with identified facilitators to success, led to an increase in the number of individuals screened and monitored. Future work will focus on expanding these efforts across diverse care settings, with strategies to support sustainability beyond pilot phases."

What is Type 1 Diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease — that means your immune system is attacking your own body.

is a condition that can affect anyone, no matter their age or family history. By getting screened for T1D-related autoantibodies, you can find out if you are more likely to develop T1D. T1D screenings are available for children too.

Visit ASKhealth.org to find a no cost T1D and disease screening program for children over 1 year, teens, and adults.

Being aware that you are at high risk for T1D enables you to recognize symptoms early, participate in T1D prevention research trials, and explore therapy options to postpone the onset of clinical T1D.

New in : "Global obesity rates have risen sharply in recent years, driving higher cardiometabolic morbidity and mortality. This troubling trend has affected people with type 1 diabetes as well. Beyond total body adiposity, fat distribution is critical for health, because central obesity is strongly linked to cardiometabolic conditions." Insulin resistance and inflammation are contributing factors.

Breakthrough T1D funded a research study to determine the cost effectiveness and efficacy of treatment and intervention clusters for people who otherwise have access to few diabetes management resources and interventions.

The research revealed that "mobile health interventions show cost-effectiveness across income settings where supporting infrastructure exists. Intervention clusters provide greater health impact but require higher investment. These findings support evidence-based resource allocation considering both cost-effectiveness and local implementation capacity."

🗓️ HCPs - Mark your calendars!

9th Symposium on General Population Screening for T1D
November 9-10, 2026

Save the date for the 9th Symposium on General Population Screening for T1D, on November 9-10, 2026, in Denver, Colorado. It will be accessible in person at the Anschutz Health Sciences Building or as a hybrid meeting.

The symposium aims to explore the expanding evidence and current international efforts to identify pre-symptomatic T1D, emphasizing the potential benefits such as delayed progression and prevention of complications. Through expert panels and case studies, the event will also address the challenges of screening, monitoring and supporting children with early-stage T1D. The discussions will conclude with future directions for screening, highlighting the need for coordinated efforts and policy guidance.

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Healthcare professionals including MD, DO, nurses, social workers, and dieticians; researchers in the area of screening, monitoring, and prevention of diabetes; lay representatives of patient organizations and representatives of funding agencies.
