So, you need to spend down your assets for Medicaid… but what can you actually spend your money on?

Last week, we introduced Medicaid Spend Down and talked about an important point: there are legal ways to spend down your assets.

It’s not as simple as, “I need to get below $2,000, so I’ll just spend the money.”

⚠️ Be careful. Certain transfers or purchases can result in a Medicaid penalty, which could delay your eligibility for long-term care coverage.

So today, we’re breaking it down! ⬇️

We put together a visual showing some of the ways you may be able to legally spend down your assets, including examples of expenses that may be allowable under Medicaid rules.

Think of this as a starting point—not a one-size-fits-all checklist.

Because when it comes to Medicaid planning, what you spend your money on can matter just as much as how much you have.

In order to qualify for long term care medicaid (the state run program that covers home and nursing facility care), you must financially qualify. That means you must have less than your state’s asset limit in your name. In 2026, the Colorado asset limit for a single person is $2,000.

If you have been denied long term care medicaid for financial reasons, there are ways to ‘spend down’ your assets legally. However, you must be careful how you spend down; people often attempt to spend their assets in ways that lead to medicaid penalities. These penalties can lead to a period of ineligibilty in long term care coverage.
