This week the Advanced Therapies in Movement Disorders (ATMD) team at the University of Colorado Anschutz completed its first high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) dual target procedure for Parkinson’s disease.

They targeted the dentatorubral thalamic tract that is associated with tremor and a new region of the brain, the pallidothalamic tract that is involved in rigidity (stiffness), bradykinesia (slowness of movements), and dyskinesias.

Treating the new FDA-approved target, the pallidothalamic tract, and performing this dual target approach is a first within the region. Immediate benefits were dramatic and the team awaits to learn the longer-term outcomes.

Congratulations again to the ATMD team and their continued pursuit to lead novel therapies to benefit our community.

Lab mates from the Welle Lab traveled to New York City for the NYC Neuromodulation Conference this past weekend.

Cristin Welle, PhD, moderated a session and gave a talk titled “Vagus nerve stimulation drives selective circuit modulation through cholinergic reinforcement.”

Postdoctoral fellows Kim Gagnon, PhD, and Sophie Brown, PhD, graduate student Elise Carter, and master’s student Tia Hutchens presented posters at the conference.
