New to orchids? Some care tips for healthy orchids
Temperature
The ideal night temperature is 62 to 65 degrees F. and daytime temperature range of 70 to 80 de
grees. Since this temperature range is similar to that of many homes, it makes an ideal house plant
Water with rain, distilled, or reverse-osmosis water as the mix approaches dryness. Do not use tap water as it has a high amount of chlorine which dries them out. They usually enjoy to be watered once a week but depends all on location. In Iowa we go through winter, our homes get very dry. I suggest a humidity tray or a small humidifier, they enjoy soaking moisture through their aerial roots. In nature most orchids grow on trees wrapping their roots around the tree and soak up rainwater and nutrients off the tree. There are people who care for orchids in full water culture and semi water culture as well, some use moss, bark and also Leca. Fertilizer: (Weekly, Weakly) Follow the correct application directions given to your choice fertilizer and the cycle your orchid is in. There is the Bloom cycle, New leaf and root growth cycle, then the plant prepares a spike and then buds start forming. Orchids are epiphytes that grow harmlessly upon another plant (such as a tree) and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, and sometimes from debris accumulating around it. Air Movement
If you have a ceiling fan or small fan in your home that will work great to produce a light movement of the leaves, in their natural environment there is a slight breeze
Repotting- Usually repot every 2 years or when the orchid outgrows the pot.
