Update in Laura's journey.

Last year, during Laura’s long hospital stay, this page became a way for us to keep everyone informed and to feel surrounded by support. When she came home and began recovering, we stepped away from posting—but we’ve never forgotten how much your encouragement meant to us.

We’re returning now to share an important update, and to ask for your help.

The good news is that Laura has recovered enough to be considered for a kidney transplant. She is getting back on the transplant list, which is a major step forward. At the same time, we’ve been encouraged to search for a living donor.

There are real advantages to receiving a kidney from a living donor. In some cases, donors and recipients are genetically similar, which can reduce the risk of rejection. Kidneys from living donors often begin working right away and may last longer. Because donors can be evaluated ahead of time, doctors can identify the best possible match, and the transplant can be scheduled at a time that works for both people.

An ideal donor is someone in good overall health, with normal kidney function, and—ideally—blood type A+. That said, even if you don’t know your blood type, have a different blood type, or aren’t sure if you qualify, you may still be able to help. There are pathways that allow willing donors to contribute indirectly, potentially helping Laura receive a compatible kidney.

If you feel moved to learn more or explore whether donation might be an option for you, we would be deeply grateful. You can contact the University of Iowa Transplant Center at 319-353-7704 and mention Laura’s name, or visit their donor information page:

We know this is a big ask, and we don’t make it lightly. Even if donation isn’t something you can pursue, sharing this message with others could make a meaningful difference.

Thank you for being part of our lives and for continuing to support Laura on this journey.
