I always co-create a birth plan with the folks I support. It includes things as simple as lighting, smells, getting in water …to emergency plans and never leaving birther or baby alone in case of emergency and who starts with baby, who stays with mom between me and the partner etc.

Birth plans work! The Role of Birth Plan in Shaping Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials..... "Birth plans were associated with a higher likelihood of normal vaginal delivery (RR 3.22; 95% CI 1.49–6.95; p = 0.003) and increased odds of early breastfeeding (RR 3.68; 95% CI 1.48–9.15; p = 0.005)... Conclusions: Birth plans may be associated with improved maternal outcomes, including increased rates of vaginal delivery, and early breastfeeding. The overall evidence suggests birth plans as a strategy to promote a more respectful childbirth."

Hey Michigan doulas and supporters! We need your help ASAP!

In 2023, MDHHS Doula Advisory Council (DAC) along with the Michigan Doula Coalition (MiDC) submitted a letter proposing an increase to the Medicaid Doula reimbursement budget. We then coordinated a letter writing campaign and arranged meetings with key representatives and senators that helps us to successfully raise the reimbursement for Medicaid covered doula services.

Wahoo!

As you know the current presidential administration and national Congress have voted to pass the bill that will cut over 800 billion dollars from Medicaid over the next decade. The medicaid coverage for pregnant moms and people may be impacted, the reimbursement rates for doulas may be cut, Doula Advisory Council may lose funding and so on.

With this being VERY time sensitive, we need each of you to submit letters to your local legislators to ask them to give their support to protect the doula support Medicaid benefit for Michiganders.

Good news! This doesn’t require you to draft an email, as those of us on the Legislative Action & Advocacy Workgroup (Members are: Melinda Britton, Elizabeth Montez, Kaela Harris, Christie Donn, Kristen Schell, Kimberly, Tori Ferrier) for MDHHS’s Doula Advisory Council have created one email template. Depending on which district you live in will determine the template that you receive to send to your representative. The template will be automatically sent to you along with your representative's name and email address!

Keep in mind that when we talk to our representatives, we are each representing Michigan doulas as a whole and that this issue is a nonpartisan matter. Supporting and improving birth outcomes for mothers, birthers, and babies is a goal that all of us can get behind regardless of our political views. We NEED you to be part of this coordinated effort, please share this with other doulas and doula supporters in Michigan.

Can you join me & email your reps? Link is in comments.

You had your baby shower, now what?!
It looks like a baby store blew up all over your house…
Your feet hurt, you’re tired most of the time in-between those random bursts of energy. The heart burn and round ligament pain that comes and goes… growing a baby is beautiful hard work!

You and your partner, maybe just you, are looking around like, what are we going to do with all this stuff, where are we going to put it, we have so much to do!

We can’t control when a baby is going to make their arrival. But what we can control a bit is how we prepare for after their arrival and our postpartum time.

How about have a nesting party!

This is where family and friends come over and help you get ready for your baby’s arrival. This can look like sorting and organize and washing baby clothes, crib/bassinet building, cleaning/sanitizing, etc.

But it doesn't stop there! Meal prepping is a awesome way to prepare as well. Postpartum nutrition is so important not just for your physical body's health but for your spiritual and mental as well. Having good nourishing meals and snacks made with love to eat is beneficial to your whole body. Freezer friendly dishes for you and anyone else in your home ready to warm up and enjoy. One less thing to worry about and more time to snuggle your new baby.

I want to support you on this journey. DM for more information on Nesting Party planning!

COVID-19 is at it strong again it seems. Lets boost and support our immune systems.

I want to share some powerful plant medicine allies that can help you stay healthy and resilient during these challenging times: Mullein Leaf, Astragalus, Sutherlandia, and Olive Leaf.

Here’s how each of these herbs can support your body’s defenses:

🌱 Mullein Leaf: Known for its soothing properties, Mullein Leaf can help support respiratory health. It acts as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the lungs, making it easier to breathe. A healthy respiratory system is crucial in fighting off infections!

🌱 Astragalus: This ancient herb is a powerhouse for immune support. Astragalus is known for its adaptogenic properties, helping the body adapt to stress and promote overall vitality. It strengthens the immune system and enhances the body’s natural defenses against pathogens.

🌱 Sutherlandia: Often referred to as the “cancer bush,” Sutherlandia is celebrated for its ability to bolster the immune system and improve overall health. It helps the body fight infections and has been traditionally used to enhance resilience during illness.

🌱 Olive Leaf: Rich in antioxidants, Olive Leaf is a fantastic immune booster. It contains oleuropein, a compound known for its antiviral properties. This herb not only supports immune function but also helps to protect the body against harmful pathogens.

Incorporating these herbs into your wellness routine can help you build a robust defense against illness. Whether you choose to enjoy them as teas, tinctures, or capsules, they can be a vital part of your health strategy!
