Changing Spaces Michigan

Changing Spaces was founded in 2016 and at that time we picked out July 26th as our Awareness Day, because of the ADA anniversary.
As we have grown, we have found sharing this day overshadows our mission.
We made the decision to move awareness day to October 10th, a day with significance for our campaign, the date the first ever adult changing table bill AB 662 was signed into law, in California, in 2015.
The ADA is 36 years old today and has, without doubt, improved the lives of America’s disabled population immensely.
However, it has not kept pace with the needs of all.
The lack of availability of height adjustable, adult size changing tables in our communities is a significant barrier to inclusion. Until the ADA is amended to reflect that need, we have to advocate state by state.
As you can see from our map we now have 28 states working on this issue.

Happy New Year from changing.spaces, Changing Spaces Campaign and Changing Spaces Michigan. 2025 saw so much advocacy and education. 2026 has many plans that will bring accessibility and inclusion into the forefront! I want everyone reading this to know though this isn’t just a one person campaign either. Every meeting, every conversation, every note, etc. makes a difference.

Are you driving to see family for the holidays? Yet another state is working to make their rest areas more accessible and inclusive to those with disabilities. Thank you to Changing Spaces Iowa for your hard work and advocacy that made this possible!

Currently, 23 of Iowa's rest stops have adult changing tables. The Iowa DOT says any new rest stops will have them built in.
