We provide financial assistance to local families with a child facing a life-threatening illness Our referrals are kept strictly confidential.

The Northern Lights Foundation provides funds to families of children with life-threatening illnesses. The money can be used to help with medical costs, travel costs, or as needed by the family. The children must be referred to the Foundation and determined medically eligible by their physician. The Northern Lights Foundation respects the privacy of the children and families we serve. The Northern Lights Foundation finances its work through individual contributions, corporate donations, foundation grants, planned gifts, special events, and other donations. Contact us at:

💙 We’re Back for Grandma’s Marathon 2027! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

We’re excited to announce that the Northern Lights Foundation is once again an official charity partner of Grandma’s Marathon! 🎉

Did you miss your chance to register? All three 2027 races are sold out, but you can still get an entry through the Northern Lights Foundation and run for a great cause! 💙

We have charity entries available for:

🏃 Grandma’s Marathon — $500 fundraising minimum
🏃‍♀️ Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon — $500 fundraising minimum
🏃 William A. Irvin 5K — $500 fundraising minimum

Charity runners will receive a personalized fundraising page through Race Roster that you can share with family, friends, coworkers and your community as you work toward your fundraising goal.

💙 A huge thank you to the NorthShore Inline Marathon! 💙

For many years, the NorthShore Inline Marathon has made giving back to local families an important part of race weekend, and we are incredibly grateful for their continued partnership and support of the Northern Lights Foundation.

This year, their generous donation of more than $8,000 will help us continue providing unrestricted grants to local families whose children are facing life-threatening illnesses.

And we want to give a very special shout-out to Christy, who helps make the Northern Lights Foundation Kid Sprints such a fun and memorable part of race weekend for our youngest racers. Year after year, she brings so much energy and enthusiasm to the event and makes sure those kids feel like the stars they are! 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️💙

Double the impact, double the support! 🌟

Many local businesses and corporate partners have programs designed to give back to community organizations. Through corporate giving and employer matching programs, your generous support for the Northern Lights Foundation can go twice as far.

Check with your employer to see if they offer donation matching or community grant programs! If they do, thank you for considering the Northern Lights Foundation to help ease the financial burden of our grant families with children facing life-threatening illnesses.

✨ The mission of the Northern Lights Foundation is to provide children in the Northland facing a life-threatening illness with an unrestricted grant for their family to use during a very challenging time.

🧸 We work to assist as many families as possible who fall under the following qualifying conditions:

🔹 At the time of referral, the medical condition has become life-threatening
🔹 Child is up to the age of 18
🔹 Family lives within 100 miles of Duluth, Minnesota

There is so much we love about this post from long time supporters The McCullough Brothers The Northwood's Band! Who remembers their Blues Brothers Tribute at our famous More Cowbell fundraiser?! We're excited to see them perform later this month in Duluth. And rumor has it you might just see an award winning NLF volunteer and an amazing singer who is also an incredibly inspiring member of one of our grant families. 💙

🌟 Our silent auction for our 2026 Annual Children’s Charity Gala is now open for bidding! If you’re unable to attend the Gala, but would still like to support the Northern Lights Foundation, check out the amazing items we have in our silent auction up for bid!

Silent Auction Details:

The auction will close at 7:30pm CST on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

Winning bidders will be notified via text immediately upon the close of the auction and prompted to pay through the auction site.

If items cannot be picked up at the venue the evening of the gala by the winner, we will ship to the address on file and charge the shipping fees to the credit card on file.

NOTE: Liquor cannot be mailed.

Shipping will be charged the market rates for FedEx, USPS, or UPS.
