CORRECTION: The in-person solo agers event is at 2014 W 3rd St. NOT 2014 W Superior St. Apologies for the confusion.

📣 Mark your calendar, Duluth!

Since 2021, Ecolibrium3 has co-led the Duluth Age-Friendly Initiative in partnership with Duluth Aging Support—and one of the most consistent things we've heard from older adults in our community is this: if you don't have family nearby to lean on, the system often wasn't built for you.
That's why we're partnering with Zenith Health Advocates to launch something new for older adults navigating the second half of life without the traditional family support system. And we're starting by listening.

Come as you are. No agenda, no experts telling you what to do. Just a free, open hour to:

Surprise medical bill? Don’t automatically pay!

Surprise medical bills are never fun. My client received a bill nearly one year after services and there are several errors – 2 different daily rates for the same dates, incorrect application of co-insurance and several mysterious posts, reversals and re-posts of charges. Bottom line? It’s not getting paid until Medicare investigates and confirms what happened.

There are protections in place to make sure you only pay what you owe. Here are some indicators that you should look deeper before automatically paying:

1. Excessive delay (6+ months after service) in billing
2. Amount owed is larger than your out-of-pocket maximum
3. Inaccuracies (services provided/received, dates, location, provider type)

Know your rights! If you suspect something is wrong, the first step is to request an itemized statement. Look for obvious errors and call for help if you need it.

Hospitalizations are scary enough - beware of the MOON notice for Medicare!

It sounds harmless, but the Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice (MOON) means you are not officially admitted as an inpatient. Why is that bad? Because it will almost always cost more out-of-pocket and prevent qualifying for rehab care in a skilled nursing facility (3 consecutive inpatient days are required).

Know your rights…
1. Patients receiving outpatient observation services for longer than 24 hours must received a MOON notice within 36 hours after services start.
2. Ask the doctor to admit you or your loved one as an inpatient.
3. If they refuse, request a written explanation of why.

If you want extra support, Zenith Health Advocates can advocate for you. Call or email for a free consultation.

Worried about a loved one driving?

Aging brings natural changes in vision, hearing, reaction time, and awareness—all of which can impact driving safety. But starting this conversation with an older loved one isn’t easy. It’s emotional, sensitive, and often avoided until there’s a crisis.

Here are tips to approach it thoughtfully:

1. Start the conversation early
Don’t wait for an incident. It’s much easier to talk about “what if” scenarios than to make decisions in the heat of the moment. Choose a time and day when everyone is open and not rushed.

2. Agree on objective signs to reassess
Work together to identify objective indicators (like failing a vision test, getting lost on familiar routes, or limited neck mobility). Having shared criteria helps remove some of the emotion later.

3. Problem-solve calmly if concerns arise
If something happens, come back to what you agreed on. Driving doesn’t have to be all or nothing- adjustments like avoiding night driving can balance independence and safety. You can also suggest a medical evaluation (sometimes a “prove me wrong” approach helps).

If you’re unable to reach agreement and safety remains a concern, Minnesota allows you to submit a Request for Examination of Driver form through the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.

Has helping an aging family member turned to caregiving? Are you feeling overwhelmed and stressed out?

According to AARP, 1 in every four adults is a caregiver and nearly half of these provide "high-intensity care". In other words, caregiving is on the rise and caregivers are doing things they never expected or prepared for.

I can create a prioritized action plan and identify resources to meet the situation and help you make informed decisions with confidence. Call Zenith Health Advocates now to explore how we can work together:

I often get questions on the role of independent patient advocates, for example:

What is the difference between an independent patient advocate like Zenith Health Advocates and…a geriatric care or aging life care manager?

Though there is considerable overlap between them, independent patient health advocates tend to come from a wide range of backgrounds and focus more on system-level advocacy. Geriatric care managers often have clinical backgrounds (e.g., social work, nursing, gerontology) and focus on care coordination and functional needs.

Evidence suggests that independent patient health advocates provide several benefits to seniors and their families, including improved communication with providers, potential cost savings, greater continuity of care, and reduced medical errors.
